It isn't the West China should be worried about. It is the locals they expect no trouble from. India has already expressed great concern about China being active in the Indian Ocean, which they do indeed consider their backyard. The Indians know fully well that China is in expansionist mode and is already making inroads in East Africa and other places. Their shared land borders are already uneasy, so a Chinese military presence to their south will only increase tensions.

Bear in mind that both nations are also nuclear. The Chinese are well aware of that, of course, since they helped the Pakistanis with their nuclear program, or so some reports have said. This area could get dangerous, particularly if the US pushes a trade war with China. Geography lesson: China also has short border with Afghanistan. Fortunately there is not real road leading up to that section of border from China, even though it used to be the route of the Silk Road.
