Our farmer

charges $4.25 a gallon from the farm or when he makes deliveries $5.00 a gal.

Price of Raw

Milk

Hi All

I've found a source for my raw milk...

A very beautiful clean farm, follows the organic rules...

Now my question, what is a fair price for me to give him for a gallon of

milk....

I think he charged me too little,,

I just need to know a fair price,, after all it is priceless to be able to get

it

If it

is goat milk it will be much more but cow milk 4-6 a gal is a fair price. We

live in GA. I think it depends where you live. I even have seen it as low as $2

a gal at a farm in Minnesota that was out of there bulk tank and you bring your own container.

Blessings,

Thanks Does he supply the jugs or mason jars or whatever you are carrying it home... Or do you supply your own... I don't want this farmer getting the raw end of the deal because he is nieve about the want of raw milk.. Organic Valley's whole milk costs $4.50/HALF gallon at the grocery

store.

I think $10.00/gallon is a good starting point. I would pay more.

I am paying $4.95 a gal in the DC area. For what I am getting, it is soooo

worth it!

It certainly depends on your part of the country. In NE Oklahoma, I buy raw cow's milk from a local dairy for $3 per gallon in plastic jugs like from the grocery. They have been in the raw milk business for decades, so they are not naive about the demand.

He puts it in his own plastic jugs like you get at the grocery store.

I am in Estillfork, Alabama, about 45 miles NE of Huntsville.

We need to add a "premium" for the risk the farmer is taking in

providing raw milk.

If your buyers think this is just another commodity purchase, then they

may not properly value what they are getting.

Here in the DC area I've seen $4.95 to $6.75, plus up to 10% for delivery for buying milk from the CARE buying club farms that come down from PA. The cow shares around here have boarding fees of $20 to $25 per month for each share, and therefore the first gallon, for cow milk, but you have to take into account the purchase of the share which is usually around $80 (one place is $30 to buy a share, but I don't think they're being realistic). Now goat milk shares sound like they go for about $10/wk boarding fee, and it's about that same price from the PA farmers, I think.

I sell licensed Grade A Raw *goat* milk and live 30 miles NE of Seattle,

and about 15 miles east of Microsoft headquarters in Redmond. The

vets are used to thinking everyone out here is a Microsoft millionaire

with an Olympic hopeful sports horse and consequently they charge

goat people very high rates as well. Property taxes are high. Don't even

talk to me about the price of gas for delivering my milk - my minivan

gets about 20 miles per gallon. In order to sell my milk at the farmers

markets in my county, the Dept of Health requires a permit of $208 per

farmers market or $275 county-wide.

When I set my price, I looked all around at various stores to see what

Meyenburg's ultrapasteurized goat milk sold for - $3.50 - $4 a quart.

And I decided that there was no way I would let my premium farm fresh

all natural raw goat milk go for less. Many/most of the licensed goat

dairies in WA that live in less expensive counties or have other sources

of income do charge less than what Meyenburg sells for.

I sell my milk in single-use plastic jugs - I don't have the interest or time

to be responsible for cleaning a zillion glass jars.

By the time I get my goat milk shipped in from SC I have just over

$18.00/gallon in it.

I consider it a privilege to have access to a Grade A Raw Milk dairy

that is willing to go to the trouble of packing and shipping the milk

to me.

Don't sell your milk for less because people whine. Be like

"Seinfeld's Soup Nazi" and tell the whiners "No Milk for YOU"

You are a working part of an ethos that will help to heal this

country... or at least delay its capitulation to barons of corporate

greed. Persevere!

I also have paid close to $20/gallon for milk when shipping is added

in. I feel fortunate to now be paying only $10/gallon for cow and goat

milk. I believe that consumers of raw milk feel they are getting a

premium product and are willing to pay a premium price. I don't think

that raw milk producers should feel they have to compete with

commercial producers. I'm concerned that if consumers are not charged

the real " cost " of the milk that farmers will either stop producing raw

milk or the quality and safety will suffer.
