Re: three years out

It is a personal observation that people seem to regain a little bit

after three years. I have dieted and lose weight very quickly. I am

not good at sticking with a diet these days due to having an irregular

schedule, but I assume once I am back on a schedule my weight will

drop a little. I hope.

I have heard that a rebound of 10 percent is normal. Guys? Or was it

ten pounds to twenty pounds?

I agree with Marta. I am 3 years and 4 months out and now it has become

harder to stay at my weight. I guess it is because we are starting to

absorb more (everything for me!) and we just don't have the luxury of eating

as much as we have for the last couple of years. It is hard.

This is the point at which our real commitment to a healthy weight is tested

again. It takes even more hard work.

Hi Marta

I posted to this once, and it must be in cyberland somewhere, so if it

ends up posting twice, I am sorry.

According to Dr K, it is a 10- 15 % weight regain. And since most of

us have lost over 100 lbs that puts our regain any where from 10 to 15

lbs.

For me it is 10 solid stuck pounds. No amount of exercise or diet

changes it. I do have another 5 lbs that comes and goes with the

wind. But that 10 is here it seems forever.

And I am 3 years and 9 mos out.

Hi Kristy

You are right that our bodies become more efficient. But we never

stop malabsorbing. This info is also from Dr K.

I think it is a combination of being able to eat more as our stomachs

stretch and relaxing in what we eat. At the last meeting Dr K did say

that our bodies become more efficient in processing the food and

absorbing it. But we always malabsorb.

For me, it is all of the above and the fact that it has been way to

hot to walk. (my chosen form of exercise) So< I believe it is a

combination of all these things.

I hate it, and hate dieting....but we have to look at it as more of a

lifestyle change and not a diet.

If I give up all bread, and most of the sugar and chips and exercise I

can and do lose. But the minute I relax, that dreaded 10 lbs comes

right back.

I am 3.5 years out. I have re-gained 11 pounds. I didn't eat anything

different it just showed up! and quickly! Also at the 3 year mark is

when nutrional deficiencies begin to show up in greater amounts. I

haven't tried to diet the rebound weight off. I keep saying I am

going to but never do. Maybe when I try to squeeze into my too tight

jeans this fall I will become motivated. Or maybe I will just wear

sweats! ;)

Hi Ladies,

I thought I would chime in here, if that is okay.

I was not the ideal patient and I still do not fit that category. :-

). My main point in having this surgery was to get healthy. Did I

dream of weighing 150? Oh boy, you bet I did! But that was not to

be my reality, in fact, 20 pounds not to my reality.

I have ALWAYS lived as a slave to the scale. To this very day, I

detest that damn thing and refuse to step on the thing unless I am

made to. Imagine if you will the fights that ensued while I

pregnant and refusing to get weighed. *wink*

Yes, we will have rebound weight and if for some reason it goes

beyond what is normal, there are options. Extreme yes, but doable.

My personal philosophy is to go by how my clothes fit. If they

begin to get tight, I adjust what I am eating. I find that no

matter what, if I 'up' my protein and lower the bad carbs, I will go

down and start to feel good again in my clothes. And in all

honesty, I feel my best when I do focus on protein and complex

carbs.

I do realize that not everyone will have the same experience as I

do. But as someone who is over 4 years post-op now, I can honestly

say, in the large scheme of things, gaining 10 pounds back is not

that big of a pay back for the wealth of health. Now please,

please, please understand I am NOT playing down the regain of 10

pounds. For some, it is incredibly uncomfortable and 10 pounds is

enough to change your clothes size. But try not to be so hard of

yourselves. Look at the road you've been down, you are mahvelous,

dahling!

I really wish I had more time to spend with you all. I try and read

every now and again, but having an 8-month old just doesn't leave

time to get online when at home. I sneak peeks at work (like

now!). I wish you all the best life has to offer.

Continued health!

Okay, I agree with Liz in that I just bought new jeans and accepted

that I am back to my usual, slightly chubby self. I agree with

lee in that I WISH I weren't here, but were back there! lol

I agree with Sharon, I am more lax about what I eat. I eat food that

I *know* will give me malabsorption problems, like white flour

products. Oh, well. I don't do it regularly, but I no longer avoid

it like the plague. I drink very little soda, though, and that is a

good thing. I eat candy by the fistfuls somedays, though. Too lazy

to cook for one, so I snack.
