Guest guest
My main Holstein/Shorthorn freshened July 10 2005. I dried her off on Saturday August 18. In the meantime I raised six calves. sold $1600 worth of pet food and kept my own household in Milk. At the 100 day mark we were feeding 5 pounds of grain and all the hay and grass she wanted. Milking once a day she was giving 5 gallons a day. If I had 10 of these and a way to sell raw milk legally, I could make a good living on 20 or so acres. I figured if I raised 4 calves to 6 weeks without milking her, then averaged 5 gallons for 300 days that would be something like 1500 gallons at $5 that would be $7500/cow. 10 would be $75,000.00 gross. If I was careful and did it with organic and 95+% grass as I do, I could possibly get a preimum. I am not quiting my day job, but it is an interesting eauation.
