Hi Kara,

Your son sounds a lot like mine! My son, who is now 6, was diagnosed at the age

of 5 with OCD. My son also has intrusive thoughts and wants reassurance from me

often for things. He has had a few issues with excessive hand washing, but

mostly intrusive thoughts. It is so heartbreaking to see your child being

tortured by their thoughts. There are a lot of great books out there, the one I

have read and liked is, " the Everything Parent's Guide to Children with OCD, " by

and Costello.

You asked about whether you should tell your child about OCD. In my personal

experiences I say definitely yes. My son is very bright, and the thoughts he

was having made him feel like he was crazy, and they made him feel really bad

and guilty. It helped him so much by seperating his thoughts from the OCD

thoughts. We call OCD the, " worry bug. " When he is having a bad thought we

would tell the, " worry bug, " to go away! Over and over again he and I worked

with every OCD though to boss it back and to be in charge of the, " worry bug. "

Just tonight he told me, " the worry bug is trying to tell me I am going to die

soon. " He knows that isn't his thought, that it is the worry bug whispering

lies. So we go through the process of telling the worry bug to go away.

Sometimes we pretend to take it and squash it, or we will throw it outside or

something to make him laugh. The OCD thoughts do come, but for him to realize

he isn't crazy and bad has made all of the difference.

At this point my son has not been on medication. I know that some children

really need to be on it, and it works wonders for them. At this point the,

" bossing the worry bug back, " has worked. I hope he never needs medication

because I would only want to use that as a last resort (as most parents do,) but

if it would ever come to the point the OCD was ruining his life then I would

have to do it. My son does take Omega 3's. A lot of parents on this message

board said they use it for their kids and it helps their moods. I buy from

Nordic Naturals and it is Omega 3-6-9 junior. If you have any other questions

please let me know. I know how hard this can be!
