OCD is a medical condition caused by chemical inbalances in the brain. It is

often genetic and once a family member is diagnosed, people begin to realize

that other people's " quirky " behavior is also OCD. I was diagnosed with it

after both of my girls were. Prior to that, we just thought I was difficult!

It is not caused by black magic or poor parenting any more than other medical

conditions like asthma or diabetes are. Welcome to the group--you will find

that there are wonderful resources here and a lot of people with a lot of

Hi Ida,

Kelley has given you a very good answer. I just wanted to say the real

ignorance sounds like the person who said this to you.

If they'd said it to me I might be tempted to tell them that I'd put a reverse

spell on them - sorry I couldn't resist! Humour can be helpful to diffuse this

kind of thing though.

So many unhelpful things are said to us as parents dealing with OCD, that you

really need a strategy for when it comes up. I have a few in my toolbox,

depending on my mood. Mostly I just forgive people their ignorance or out and

out stupidity before they even open their mouths. Better than turning yourself

inside out over it, I find.

This person may believe very strongly in this, and actually be wanting to help.

Sometimes its best to leave others to their beliefs, rather than try and

convince them otherwise. I do have some personal experience with individuals

like this and would be happy to talk offline with you if you want to discuss

this any further.
