Guest guest
Just wanted to share I got to sit in on about 30 mins of a conference in whom was the speaker. I wish I could have attended the entire day, she had some excellent suggestions. One thing she suggested is to write social stories from the child's interest. She gave an example about a student who was obsessed with Elvis Presley who said offensive things to people. They wrote a story about how Elvis Presley used to offend people but learned that he didn't have to say everything he thought, how he wanted to say nice things... She gave another story about a girl who was really into dressing sexually and would leave the house well-clothed but by the time she was off the bus she looked really slutty (my words, not her's). She was a huge britney spears fan, lol. They had a package mailed from Hollywood with a picture of Britney with her faked signature that looked just like it, with a typed letter explaining how she only dressed provocatively on stage and the rest of the time wore pants and jeans. It also said she had a wardrobe person who dressed her and if she ever came to hollywood with a music contract they would be happy to help her dress, too. ROFL! Because it had the postmark & same signature the school believed it, of course all the kids couldn't believe she got a letter from her! She suggested another way of teaching is to use video. I know Allie was showing out at school and one of her helpers pulled out a camera phone & videotaped it & showed it to her. Allie was very ashamed. Then the helper promised if Allie did good work the helper would video her being a good student. Now all the helper has to do when Allie starts showing out is pull out the camera phone & allie immediately starts pretending to work. LOL! That told me a lot about how Allie is embarassed about having a meltdown, though, which I commented to the staff. She also suggested, and I may not have it right, Simon Baron-Cohen having some sort of social skills computer game? I might have it wrong, I was trying to help at the end. She listed some other really good social skills programs but I didn't get them wrote down in time, I'm hoping to get them from some of the other attenders.
