Just be sure to not use too much. Most melatonin seems to be sold in doses many

times higher than the average body makes naturally, which is about .3 mg per

night.

As Velden already mentioned, make sure not too overdose. Also, it might be a

good idea not to take it constantly. Melatonin downregulation appears to be

possible - and the last thing you'd want.

If you're not averse to homeopathy, there are homeopathic products available

that are supposed to raise melatonin. See http://www.mhpvitamins.com/id113.html

for instance. According to homeopaths, low potency is less likely to cause

side-effects/long-term effects.

Is there any particular brand of melatonin that is best? Where is the

best place to purchase it? I'd like ideas for online and in store, since I

need to pick some up soon but would be open to ordering online if there is a

better formulation out there.

My ds' been having sleep problems the past two nights. He wakes in middle

of night and can't get back to sleep for hours. He was an exhausted train

wreck going into school this morning. I think it's due to the increased

zoloft dose. We increased about 10 days ago...I suppose the blood levels

have increased to a point where it may be affecting his sleep. Nothing else

has changed, and if anything he's been feeling better/less stressed with

dose increase in terms of school demands during the day. Does this sort of

thing get better after a child adjusts to the dose increase? Our

psychiatrist had previously recommended melatonin (3mg to start) if ds ever

had sleep problems, so I want to give it a try tonight.

Hi, Fay,

The brand of Melatonin that we use is called Natrol. It comes three ways:

2.5 mg Liquid, 3 mg pills, and 5 mg pills. I would ask your pediatrician

which strength he or she recommends. It takes a little while to work,

though, so I guess I'd give it to your son about 45 minutes before bedtime

for starters, to see what time he gets sleepy. Good Luck!

My son isn't really getting tired even with 1.25. The bottle says you can take

the whole lozenge, which is 2.5 mg. Anyone go higher than 1 mg? Any problems? Is

there a preferred brand? I kind of have an acid stomach with Nature's Way. Is

the Trader Joe their own brand? I could probably order any brand from Vitacost.

I just wanted to chime in and say we have been using Melatonin in pill form

for 3 years. It works wonders, no hangover and is safe. You can get it in

the vitamin dept. of most stores. Benedryl has a drying agent and on young

children can have the exact opposite effect and make them more excitable.

My daughter sometimes takes melatonin, although we also use benadryl. I also

take melatonin, and it works great for me. My daughter, who is 14 and about 100

lbs, takes the same dose as me, which is a 3mg pill. I get it online from

douglas laboratories, which is douglaslabs.com. I get some other meds from them

through my doctor, so you might have to have a dr. set you up with ordering from

them, but not sure. All of their meds are quality controlled pharmaceutical

grade. This works for us, but something from a health food store may be just as

good, you probably just need to go up on the dose.
