Guest guest
Can anyonelse relate to the fact that the majority of people be it educators, principles, social workers ect, they dont really get OCD or really know much about it. Its so weird to me it seems like a very small percentage of psycholgist, psychiatrist and social workers really know how this disease works. I am learning that for the most part the system is broken. Guest guest
Hello, I wish I could say different, but our experience has been similar to yours. Our psychiatrist didn't spend much time with us and only gave my son his medications. Our psychologist didn't use ERP (the standard of OCD therapy; he used only talk therapy. These professionals didn't help us much so we ended up using ERP on our own. It was long and difficult but we finally figured it out. But, I can't help thinking how much easier it would have been for us if we had had some good help. Best, Joni
Guest guest
Yes. We were lucky to have 1 (ONE!) psychologist in our area who specialized in treating children with OCD. It took me awhile to find her(OCD Foundation website), then took awhile to get in to see her, but it was well worth it. My child saw a psychiatrist before I found the ONE, & that dr. said my child was depressed & started talking meds with me. DUH, we were all depressed ... because of the OCD. I can't imagine trying CBT/ERP with someone who wasn't trained to do it. It was/is hard enough & would have been so much harder for us if we had to seek treatment from someone who didn't have a clue. Guest guest
Yes. And it's sad considering the statistics of OCD. It's more prevalent than Autism, yet gets very little attention. Guest guest
I completely understand, Alida. So many times I wished I could take it from our son and bear it myself. It's hard when they are going through a rough patch. ( Are you able to get some time to yourself, Alida? Sometimes that can help us cope. OCD has the potential to drag us down so we become depressed too.
