Guest guest
Hmmm, therapy before. Well, generally, with the first time therapy, parents/others have said to give it a 5 visit " trial " and they should be starting on CBT/ERP, by then you should know if the therapist understands OCD treatment. > > > Hi everyone, > > Second question for the night: We just started with a new CBT therapist for our 10-year-old son, and she told us in our first session that she doesn't want to start ERPs right away. To improve the chances of success, she told us, he needs to review and relearn the strategies (he's had therapy before) because he's at a different stage of cognitive development. Does this make sense, or should he be able to start ERPs right away? > > Thanks very much for your feedback. > > Sincerely, > . >
Guest guest
Hi , My son recently started seeing a new therapist, after not having therapy for over two years. The therapist met with me and my husband first, to learn about my son and his issues, etc. When my son had his first appt with her, she asked him what things make him anxious/cause thoughts (he has intrusive thoughts and excessive worrying), and she started to build his hierarchy. His ERP is listening to loop tapes that cause him anxiety. He received his first loop tape a few days after his first meeting with her. So she really jumped right into things, which I was really happy about. But I would think a therapist would need just one or two sessions to be able to start ERP, unless the child just isn't opening up about what needs to be worked on. Guest guest
My ds is 14 yrs old. Dtr gave him erp homework on the third visit. Son has contamination issues. First two visits were explaining ocd, erp to us and him talking to my son. By the third visit, they had a heirarchy of items, and dtr told us what to do at home for erp. Guest guest
Sorry I don't know about that. My daughter is on her 3rd go round with treatment now & since she's a teen the treatment is more centered on her & making her responsible, rather than having parents supervise it all. When my daughter was 11 (our 1st treatment), we were much more involved. Our basic treatment is the same (CBT/ERP)...it is what it is. My daughter started ERPs right away (very limited), due to end of school issues & to allow time to make a hierarchy list to work on. You may want to ask more questions to find out what the therapist is thinking. Good luck & I hope your son's treatment goes well. Guest guest
Our son had been through a lot of therapy before we found someone who understood OCD and used ERP. None of helped prior to doing ERP. He did not need to review and relearn strategies. He had two appointments where we went over his history, but by the third appointment he was making his hierarchy list. By the fourth, he was working on the lowest thing on his list.
