Guest guest
The thing tht has helped me the most with this journey is being able to read and learn all about the meds, stages, and people that are dealing with much the same problems. I have been on this trip for about 3 1/2 yrs and am now in the end-stage with my Mother. The thing I remember the most with Mom in the begining was I would notice something different, perhaps an action, think about it, then in few days mention it to my husband and talk about it, and then the confirmation when realized what I was seeing was infact what I thought it was. I have to say that on some days , even after this long a time, I still find it hard to believe that Mom is in the condition that she is in. Each stage came on and was noticed most with the need to make med adjustments, and when she would make adjustment ie. giving up driving, asking for assistance in getting to and from church (walking) and afraid she would get lost, writting notes as reminders, etc. Some times her condition changes were suttle due to the flucation in cognative ability. That has not changed to this day. Mom is in NH and she is not able to turn herself, she is no longer able to get up and get around, and she may sleep in a coma like state for 22 hrs or more in a day, and then like today, you go in she is looking around and wants to eat dinner, and is able to help herself with the spoon with a few bits. She has gone from 130# to 80# and she has never been able to be rid of the hallucinations from the beginning to now. The past few days when she does wake up she is very very cranky, verbal and active, biting and pinching, etc. Her vitals today stayed around 64/45 and still the normal action when she did finally wake up. Have wanted to take her off all meds but with her aggressive behavior she still needs the zyprexa , neurontin, and remeron. God Bless each of you that are and have been in this journey. NH concerns, I am so greatfull that there is a place for Mom and they are much more able to meet her needs than I would be at home. I did keep her home until the end of March this year, and it was not something I could have done alone. I had caregivers that came to her home and helped for about 1 yr. I do not feel bad about NH now. Just thankful for the extended time she got to stay at home. Joanne in Oregon

Guest guest
You also need to have Free T3 and Free T4 levels tested, as well as antibodies. Most of us need to have both our Free T3 and Free T4 in the upper half of their ranges to feel well and be free of hypo symptoms. Some folks can get there on a T4 only med such as $ynthroid. Others need some added T3, usually from Armour or Cytomel. What you may need is highly individual. The problem is finding a doc willing to Rx one of the meds with T3. That is why I keep a list of such docs on our site in "files." Welcome to the group! nurseshirley2003 wrote: Hi everyone. I am so glad I came upon this sight. Guest guest
Hello...Im new to this site as well. I know your frustration with the thyroid issue. Mine shows under the new values as high at 3.92 with my t3's and 4's normal range. No matter what I do I cant lose weight, and the heart palpitations can be very frightening! Also, I was wondering if you've ever had your liver checked? Sometimes in liver disease the thyroids t4's are unable to convert to t3's because of some type of liver damage. Just a thought. You might ask the doctor if they have tested you for hepatitis C. that is not as routine as hepatitis b (both are different, c is an RNA virus and b is a dna). You have to ask to be tested, regardless if you are what they call high risk or not. Just a thought. hugs, steph p.s. my doc still goes by the old values regarding tsh, so i show as normal. thats very discerning to me, but we will see what my next lab shows. > > Hi everyone. Guest guest
Jan, Maybe there should a note on the home page that says "Get tested for TSH, Free T3 & Free T4. Post results, including lab ranges, for us and we will go from there." Also, include paragraphs 2 and 4 below. Just an idea. Guest guest
I wouldn't worry about TSH now that you are on meds. Ask your doctor for the labs ranges, each one can be different. Guest guest
That's good that your Dr has acknowledged that you have a conversion problem (from T3 to T4) How much Cytomel did she prescribe? My opinion is to slowly start on it. Depending on how much she has prescribed, you may want to divide the dose. Take part in the morning, the other part in the afternoon, evening. Guest guest
That's a low enough amount, that you probably wont have a problem with taking it once a day. I like to take mine when I start to get tired in the afternoon. (FYI) It would be a good thing to get copies of your labs, that way you will always have a reference point. Guest guest
Do keep us posted about your care. We may be wanting to add him to our list of Cytomel docs at some point. I do like to see if docs keep folks adequately medicated before I put them on our lists.Shirley Russo wrote: Dr V. Hartig at "Your Family Doktor" in Webster. Every lab has its own reference ranges. Most of us need to have our Free T3 and Free T4 in the upper half of their ranges to feel well and be free of hypo symptoms. Some folks need them to be near the top of their ranges. What you may need is highly individual. Who is the doc that Rxed Cytomel for you? Shirley Russo wrote: She has started me on 5mcg of cytomel. Guest guest
Hi , Our daughter was diagnosed when she just turned 5. She suffered from hoarding, reassurance questioning, and having to have everything be " just so " . She's now 6, and feeling much more in control of her OCD, although some months are worse than others. I'd be happy to chat any time, and good luck with your son's diagnosis. Best wishes, > > > > > > > > > > > Good evening, > > I am new to this group.  I have an almost four year old son who, although > not officially diagnosed yet, is well on his way to the OCD diagnosis.  > We started noticing the behavior right before he turned two and have > finally started the process of getting professional help over the last > couple of months.  I'd be interested to hear anything that other parents > with children who experienced symptoms at this age have to share regarding > behavior, treatment, etc.   Feel free to email me privately if you > prefer. Thank you.  > > > > >
Guest guest
Our 15 year old son was dx at age 3 and in hindsight had oCD since birth with first CLEAR compulsions at age 9 months. At 3 he had , touching things, just right, setting things up, lost of strange clothing obsessions and rules, repetative questioning and worrying about the weather, wind, rain, snow, fear that family was dead if they were out of his sight( ie the next room), drawing obsessions , cleaning, hoarding, licking spots off things, tapping, straightening, counting, repeating, sleep rituals, and many more. We did some pretty lame CBT/ ERP with someone who was not that familiar with this age group ( very hard to find someone who is). Prozac was rec at age 3 but we refused. We did CBT/ERP, diet changes, vitamins, taught him a lot of relaxation techniques, breathing techniques etc, and he got much better although not totally well over 2 years. Then good for about 3 years then TERRIBLE again at age 8- on meds at 8 due to stopping eating for contamination fears as well as all the other stuff. We had a rough few years , but by 12 he was pretty good again. Then the summer between 12 and 13 did some really good CBT/ ERP and he has been really quite good since. Still on low dose meds after a trial off all meds but asked to go back on. I STRONGLY recommend STARTING out with someone who is an EXPERT with OCD in very young children even if it means traveling to an intensive outpatient experience for the summer and staying in a Mc HOuse or something. The number of wasted years my kid had due to not being able to find good help is so sad. If I had anything to do over again, it would be going to the best person in the world early and doing it intensively for a few months then making do locally after you know what good help looks like. Happy to talk about it more if you want.
