Guest guest
Alida, I have no experience with any of those options, but my guess is that the OCD will not be helped by military/boarding school discipline alone. In my child's case, some school practices set off her OCD and made it worse. Our best results came from therapy with a psychologist trained to treat OCD in children/adolescents. I would recommend trying the usual treatment for OCD (CBT/ERP)and if that's not working try medicine and/or a residential treatment program for OCD. Is your son's OCD severe enough to require residential treatment? Maybe a therapist can discuss that with you. Good luck. I know how frustrating it can be to figure out the best way to help your child. Guest guest
Since his behavior is related to an illness I think the only logical place is a residential treatment center. The others assume that he is making willful decisions and this is likely not the case. Guest guest
Bonnie, you phrased that so nicely. I still have to remind myself (more often than I'd like) that my daughter's OCD behaviors are not a deliberate/willful choice. Guest guest
Hi Alida, so sorry that incident happened with your son! But at least he sees the seriousness of this side of OCD and his reactions now. Military or similar type school won't help his OCD. Now - if you can find a " therapeutic " school or center, one that offers therapy for kids with different " issues " (OCD, bipolar, just any severe illness and need treatment outside home) then that would work much better. Even staying home (or with uncle) and seeing a therapist for frequent visits to treat it now may help - assume he's not seeing a therapist yet?? So - that residential therapeutic center you mentioned sounds the best choice. If he stays with his " contaminated " uncle long enough, he won't be able to keep holding OCD back, it'll start to show in little ways. It's always the immediate family and home that they just " let go " with their OC behavior.
