Guest guest
Hi all, We're pretty sure my 5 year old son has OCD. He's really young to have it, so we were surprised to see it surface right now. But we've got a lot of family members with it and knew what it looks like before he started struggling a few months ago. We're still awaiting the final diagnosis, but friends of the family who are therapists and seen him casually since he changed have all said the same thing. He struggles at this point with instrusive thoughts and scrupulosity, and he spends much of his day asking me questions about whether something he's just done or thought is " okay " or not. He has meltdowns daily because he's frustrated that his brain keeps telling him he " doesn't like " people that he really does like/love, and I spend a lot of my day calming him down. It's exhausting. I was wondering if there's anyone here that has a really young child with OCD that could answer a couple of questions for me. When you have a child this young, how much do you tell them about having OCD? What does your child's OCD look like? Also, at such a young age, I'm nervous about medicating right away because he's so young and so much of his personality is still developing. Can anyone share thoughts on this aspect? I'm curious, basically, to hear insights from people whose children were really young when they started the diagnosis/treatment journey. I'm a really proactive person who takes suggestions, and this is all new to me. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Kara
