Guest guest
It doesn't sound to me like the school is being very helpful. Just because he's missing a lot of school, he needs inpatient treatment? That doesn't really make sense. Since you work full time, it doesn't sound like homeschooling is feasible, and there must be other options. You mentioned that he has an IEP. According to that IEP (under federal law) the school district has to provide him with a free and appropriate education (at their expense) whatever it takes. I am not knowledgeable about the options, but I have heard of school districts providing homebound instruction for students who are unable to come to school due to illness. If I were in your shoes, I think I would contact the special education director in your district and insist that this be addressed. If that doesn't work, he can go higher up the ladder. A good resource for knowing your rights, as a parent of a child with an IEP, is wrightslaw.com. Hope this helps a bit. Hugs. Guest guest
It can be very frustrating dealing with schools. They do not all understand OCD. I went through a hard time last year as they wanted to move my daughter to a clinical school instread of middle school....I pushed back hard and she adjusted great to middle school. Do not let the school push you around. We learned the hard way--its your child and they cannot tell you what is best. Subject: Tics To: Date: Tuesday, May 31, 2011, 5:59 PM Â Well now my sons chief complaint is the tics. he is throat clearing every few seconds constantly. It is keeping him up all night long ,he tries to sleep but cant stop the throat clearing it kept us up all night as well just hearing him thru the walls it was heartbreaking. His psychiatrist said I need to see a Neurologist, I made a appointment they cant see him for a week. His school is giving me a hard time they dont understand all this. I have kept him out due to lack of sleep with the tics and if I sent him in he would be throat clearing the whole time. They said maybe he needs inpatient treatment? I told them that his psychologist and psychiatrist dont think so they think he needs a neurologist right now as well as seeing them. I asked if he could do his work at home and they said this isnt a home school, I said I understand that but in a situation like this you surely must understand. They are pushing the school social worker on us which is fine they want us to collaborate with him, said that he is very experienced in these things, I said I understand but I have a full time job and have been taking off to get him to psychologist and psychiatrist and now neurologist its not that I dont want to collaborate its that I am being stretched very thin right now and they dont get that. I told them I am getting him the help he needs at very repuatble places but they want in on it I said I gave the doctors permission to talk with you I call you to let you know whats going on I think they dont get the anxiety, panic attacks and tics and ocd they dont get that it can be disabling they jut want him in school. When he said a crisis center I did get angry because if he did need one it would have to be one that knows OCD and for adolescent not just a crisis center at a ER I dont think they know about OCD as they claim because he hides it at school and when I tell them these things they dont believe it because they dont see it and if they KNEW about it they would know kid hide it Im very upset about the whole thing they want him in school which I understand they dont get it I am reliving his 5th grde iep meeting all over again with the teachers looking perplexed at the doctors reports and said they were shocked becuse they dont see this, now this school thats suppoed to know about OCD and such same thing gain he doesnt project it at school sorry for the vent just frustrated
Guest guest
I know what your kid is going through as a throat clearer myself. Mine gets worse with stress. I use deep breathing, but then I am an adult, so I can handle it better. Silly question I am sure, but has your kid been tested for allergies? My throat clearing gets worse when my allergies, seasonal, are bad. Junk runs down the back of my throat. I use nose spray to help ease the issue. Just a thought. Guest guest
I can't remember if you said. . But, was he checked for Tourettes? Eye blinking can be a common symptom of Tourettes. And OCD and Tourettes often go hand in hand. Not implying he has it, but maybe something to check into, if you haven't yet. BJ > > No he hasnt thats something I should look into.
