Different schools have different processes but an IEP

always has an evaluation process where the chid has an

IQ test, OT evaluation, speech maybe, and a psychological evaluation,

it would be good if you had that done privately with your

specialist and the specialist recommends accomodations or

services.

To receive services such as social skills or therapy or special

education you need an IEP.

A 504 is for things that don't require services like sit in the

front of the class, allow extra time on tests.

If you need things like late arrival, gradual return to school

after vacations, modified homework ...you start to need an IEP.

You most likely need a therapist or psychiatrist to be an

advocate for the necessity of an IEP. Schools don't

like to give these out unless they have to.

Hi , we had a 504 Plan for my son. With the 504 Plan you can get any

accommodations or modifications you need, for things like his schoolwork or

tests or classroom seating or a " safe place " to go when needed, less homework,

extended testing time, modified assignments....

If eligible for an IEP, the IEP can also have all those things on it that can go

on a 504 Plan. Some supports are considered " special ed services " and are only

provided with an IEP; quick example, any child who gets speech or occupational

therapies has an IEP. I think assistive technology also falls only under an

IEP.

Schools have to follow the Plans. With either, you can call a meeting at any

time, if you felt things needed changed or added, etc. Or that teachers aren't

following the Plan!

I just googled and found some info and haven't read it all, but they had OCD as

examples!! So here are the links, hope they are helpful:

We also have a " Role of School Personnel " article in our FILES section that you

may find helpful.

I think it's best to look up some internet resources LDonline.com,

wrightslaw.com. There's also IEP guides at the library and the book store.

There are a lot of differences between IEP's and 504's. Depends on the amount

of accommodations needed, the degree to which the school is sensitive to your

child's needs (and will be in the future) and I believe also depends on the

kinds of services your child needs. If your child is having a lot of difficulty

in more than 1 or 2 areas, I say go for the IEP.

Good luck,

  • 5 months later...

504 is working for us . My son had an IEP up until the start of high school. he

is an A,B student and academically didn't need the resources tied to an IEP. he

needs more of the social aspect of school like going to his locker early, more

time on tests, sitting where he feels comfortable etc.he never stops talking

about the kids at school and in his classes about what they do or are doing that

upsets him. His own words and I quote " school is a learning institution " and my

job is to go there to learn and then go home. Not to socialize.

Oh Pam, had to smile at what your son said. I've said about the same when

fussing about any behavior, to save socializing for lunch and other times,

they're there to learn and the teachers job is to teach, etc.

Actually for anyone who feels " left out " at school, that attitude may help them

get through any related feelings about it.

Looking back, wish I'd felt a bit more that way myself, would do a lot of things

differently (not worry about that social part so much growing up).

We tried telling that to dd last night, but she just sobbed and sobbed.  No one

to sit with at lunch - she says people save spots, even though they are not

supposed to.  No friends to be partners with when they need to in class - I

remember having HUGE anxiety about that in school.  I was SO shy and had few

friends.  When we were doing parnters/groups, I always hoped the teacher would

assign the groups, otherwise I felt left out and HATED having to ask someone to

be in their group.  I still do !  And at recess she has other friends in other

classes out there, but from time to time it is just her class out there and she

says then she has no one to play with.  SHe said yesterday she was playing

alone and her teacher had a group of girls go up to her to ask if she wanted to

play.  She said no.  She said she was SOOOO embarressed, it was awful.  My

heart is breaking for her.
