Does your psychiatrist pretty much dispense and manage meds for OCD?? Our 10

year old has been seeing a psychologist for the last year. The connection

between our dd and her psychologist has been going really good. Our

psychologist has recommended meds and a psychiatrist at this point of her

therapy. We are on our 2nd psychiatrist and its just not the same experience.

Luckily we go to a Center for Neuropsychiatry, I have two daughters with OCD,

one is on meds.

The psychiatrist is in charge of her medicine and we see her every three months

but both daughters see a psycologist in the same office for their CBT/ERT. So

both Dr's are in communication with each other. The psychiatrist appointment is

literally 10 minutes, the CBT is what makes the difference for us.

My 15 year old daughter's psychiatrist pretty well is for managing the meds. and

the CBT and counselling are taken care of by a psychologist and a therapist.

But I must say he is very good to get in touch with when we have questions or

concerns and if she's having a bad day and we aren't able to reach her

therapist, we can phone him and he will talk with Amy on the phone & has even

squeezed her in an appt.

He's very aproachable and she's quite pleased with him. So far we've been lucky

that way.

I find that unless I suggest a medication change our psychiatrist

won't. She is very kind and nice but the topic for 30 minutes

is on how the medication is working.

What I wanted from the psychiatrist was the willingness to

write a school advocacy letter and ours does.

It is the therapist though that helps me figure out if the

medication is working and when to ask for a change,

and it is the therapist that really knows what is

going on week to week.

It sounds like your psychologist stopped seeing your dd once the referral

was made to the psychiatrist. That's no longer how it's typically done.

Usually, the psychologist keeps seeing the child for therapy, and the

psychiatrist just manages the meds.

Used to be that psychiatrists usually did the therapy along with med.

management, but that has changed in the past decade or two.

Our psychiatrist reviews ds' symptoms and functioning with us, then we

discuss any med. changes that we may want to make.
