Guest guest
Hi, My 8 yr old son was diagnosed w/ OCD about a year ago. He is being treated off and on by a psychologist who is familiar w/ cog. behavior therapy and EXP. He has had different types, but they have all but faded away. But, recently he started washing his hands after playing legos, cause he thought they were " dirty. " It has increased dramatically in the last week to the point where he is pretty much staying in my bedroom washing his hands often and watching tv. Last week he came home from his classes at a learning co-op, took off his clothes and went straight away to the shower. Then wouldn't come out of his room to play w/ a friend who was here. I have an appointment at the end of next week, and we have talked about bossing back, and he has been able to wait for 5-10 min before giving in to the hand washing. But tonight his hands are incredibly raw, and cut, and seem to have a rash. He is in extreme pain! We have tried different lotions, but they burn. I was able to put polysporin lotion on it tonight. He is sobbing because he doesn't think he will be able to take his karate class tomorrow cause he can's close his fist. He also is worried that he will not be able to play in his basketball game on sat. or attend a nerf-party bd party which he has really been looking forward to. Does anyone have any advice on something to put on his hands to give relief? Im the meantime I thought we could buy wipes to use on his hands and limit the number that he can use daily. At this point I don't think he could put his hands in the water cause of the pain it would cause. Thanks,
Guest guest
Kathy Congratulate your son for being able to fight back the OCD even if only for 5 or 10 minutes at a time. Good job!! My daughter was diagnosed at about 13 yrs - same issue, germs. Excessive hand washing, excessive showering, etc. In an effort to ease the dryness and chapping, I filled every hand soap pump bottle in my house with & 's baby soap. It did help... but I don't think you'll see any results within a couple days. You might have some luck with Shea Butter (not the lotion with shea butter in it... but pure shea butter - maybe try an organic/health food store). If you think he could sleep with thin gloves on... try Neosporin. The cream type might be more comfortable, but the ointment (personal opinion here...) might do better. Slather on lots of it, cover with gloves and let him sleep with them on - or even spend a couple hours during the day with them on. I don't think the Neosporin will sting. Good luck LT In a message dated 2/10/2011 11:08:52 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, ruehlman@... writes: Hi, My 8 yr old son was diagnosed w/ OCD about a year ago. Guest guest
Hi , I know that burn/hurt from dry hands. My hands, on their own, seem to just dry & crack as soon as the heat goes on each year. You're right, just getting them in water hurts. The best lotion I found was St. Ives for Extra Dry Skin. Doesn't hurt so much and also seems to heal/help fast. A couple others for extra dry, think maybe the Vaseline brand...were pretty good, but I've used St. Ives since it's my fav. Sorry this new OCD popped up but happy to hear he's managed to conquer those past behaviors! > > Hi, > > > My 8 yr old son was diagnosed w/ OCD about a year ago. Guest guest
P.S. Just check that lotion bottle. It's St. Ives Advanced Therapy lotion. (I said extra dry skin) > > > > Hi, > > > > > > My 8 yr old son was diagnosed w/ OCD about a year ago. Guest guest
, I am newer to this group but my daughter who we are just discovering having OCD has always had eczema since she was born practically and we use Aquaphor and with rash Cortaid. The Aquaphor is great because it is fragrance free and dye free for sensitive skin. It is made by Eucerin and is an ointment. Now that she is becoming very obsessive about had washing and her hands look sun burnt all the time we are using both of these when she will let us. My daughter also loves to get showered and then barricade herself in her room at night but she has got better at doing that latter in the evening. She doesn't play with most of her toys anymore which makes me sad and she won't get rid of any so I am beginning to think she has a hoarding issue too..or she gets that from me because I save everything. We are currently looking for a new therapist because we were going to play therapy which wasn't helping at all.  ________________________________ To: Sent: Thu, February 10, 2011 8:08:39 PM Subject: 8 yr old and severe hand washing  Hi, My 8 yr old son was diagnosed w/ OCD about a year ago. Guest guest
Hi, . Our son, who is 18, (just lowered meds) has been going through another hand washing phase, after years of it not being a problem, so this is recent for us too. We've used Neosporin on the cracks. And prescription cortisone when it was really bad, but not long term since it can thin the skin. We found that Eucerin makes a calming cream that helped him when nothing else would. It works immediately to take the sting out. He's also been sleeping with socks over his hands, at night, after slathering on cream. We tried shea butter, and he reacted to it with a rash, so went back to Eucerin cream in a little tub, but sure either would work, as long as your son doesn't react. I saw recently, on a commercial that a hand cream company made a hand washing soap and cream combined. I can't remember which company it was though. We thought of trying that, but will have to try to remember it first. lol Sorry, I know that's not very helpful. Glad he is back to using ERP. I hope he is able to make some progress soon.
