Guest guest
I am on long island too! Son is 14 with ocd since last august. Would love to talk more to you. It does get better + is the toughest thing for us parents but this group is awesome. I have been looking for help on this planet in long island,ny parent/teen support groups are hard to locate comfort in knowing we have each other. My son is on prozac 10 mg 1 1/2 years now and doing much better. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry 8 year old daughter OCD Hi everyone, I live on Long Island. I found out my daughter had ocd Aug of 2010. We have been going crazy with it. Especially me. I never wanted to put her on med. but I had no choice when things got so bad she could not even go to school. She is now on Zoloft low does 62.5.we were trying to get to 75mg but her side effects had been bad so we reduced it to the 62.5. I am also giving her vitamin suppliments, & fish oil.I also just started a gluten free diet for her.I read that gluten can have something to do with the brain and ocd. Does anyone have a simular situation. I feel like I am the only one on this planet with a child with ocd. It is very scary and lonely. Guest guest
Hi , only a moment to reply now, but welcome! I sure understand about feeling all alone. My son (now 22) had his OCD begin way back in 6th grade and I think we were the only ones in the county (I'm sure we weren't!) and I worked in the office at our local mental health agency. I think by the end of that first year, I then knew more than any therapist there! Felt like I did. I wanted to mention this one place that may be near to you that treats for OCD. I'm bad on geography, lol. But if anywhere near you and you don't have anyone yet, this would be a great place to take her for therapy, etc.: http://westsuffolkpsych.homestead.com/ While at the site above, read through their articles, good info! Guest guest
Hi , Going gluten free saved us from all sorts of issues, including OCD. We also had to do Zoloft, which was also a lifesaver for us. I have 3 daughters with OCD.. One of them with severe OCD (almost 8yr old) .. My daughters had many signs of gluten intolerance so we did testing for it, which revealed an intolerance/sensitivity. After removing gluten, we saw so many improvements in so many areas.. It was really amazing. One of my daughters stopped all signs of OCD without medication. I would recommend to you to also do casein free (and possibly even soy free) for a while.. Casein proteins will continue to wreak havoc on your daughter's brain until her gut is healed from gluten damage (if she does in fact have gluten damage). Misty  ________________________________ To: Sent: Tue, February 8, 2011 9:19:39 AM Subject: 8 year old daughter OCD  Hi everyone, I live on Long Island. Guest guest
Thank you so much for that information. I did not have her tested for allergy of gluten but just read about it. I thought is was worth a shot. I will try anthing to avoid long term medication. I would like to get her off as soon as possible. At this point in time it does not seem possible. I hope for the best. I am not sure what caisen free is though. I will have to look in to it. So for she has been doing gluten free for 4 days only and it has been very hard to substitute her favorite foods. Also very expensive. But again it is worth every penny. Guest guest
Hi I can relate. My daughter just turned 9 but it wad about 9 months ago that it became obvious that she had ocd. We are still avoiding medication. It hasn't been an easy journey. It is scary and lonely. I too felt like someone had taken my daughter as her personality seamed to change so much. She too was very carefree...easy going... Now she has so much anxiety. It is said to see part of her childhood taken from her. Snow used to be her favorite. We live in NC where we don't get much snow. Now she has total meltdowns on snow days. I wrote a blog about it. slifejourney@... We just did IgG testing (not the same that an alergist would do...that is IgA ) We see a Naturopathic Doctor. Casein is a milk protein. It is also found in many dairy free alternatives (soy and rice cheeses). feel free to email me off list. It helps me to connect with others esp with a daughter and one close to my daughters age. gmom23@... Guest guest
Welcome, . OCD can be scary, and lonely. So many don't understand, (even if you try to explain), the depth of what OCD really means. Sometimes the very thing you fear is the very thing that helps. What kind of side effects was she having? Just curious. Has Zoloft been the only med she's tried? Sometimes different meds can have different effects. Has she been to a therapist who uses CBT/ERP (cognitive behavioral theapy / exposure and response prevention) therapy? That is the recommended first line of treatment for OCD. Welcome to the group. Guest guest
Hi, thanks for your response. I am going to try the gluten and casien diet and see what happens. I would like to take her off med soon. When we hit 50mg of zoloft I felt like I got my daughter back. She was happy again. Anxiety free. It was amazing. They increased it from there and I started getting sick to my stomach about the medication. So I will try the diet as well as fish oil, probiotic , multivitamin and inositol supplements. I read that this is helpful for ocd. A multivitamin without choline in it. Choline suppose to irritate ocd and copper. Talk to you soon. Subject: Re: 8 year old daughter OCD To: Date: Wednesday, February 9, 2011, 3:43 PM Hi I can relate. Guest guest
My daughter in going for cbt therapy weekly for the past 2 months. That is great. The medication area she has been on prozac for 1 week. I did not like how she was reacting. She looked very irritated more than usual and tired. I switched to zoloft and her personality turned around, She was in a great mood again for a while. When they increased the med to 75mg I was sickened over it. I felt like she was irritated more again. She was like she did not want to be in her own skin. So I reduced in down again. Here I am now. I have her now on 60mg. I am shaving it down until I get to 50 again. I am also changing her diet to gluten free casien free. Maybe 1/2 casien free. I have to see how it goes. So far 4 days on gluten free diet. Thanks, talk to you soon Subject: Re: 8 year old daughter OCD To: Date: Wednesday, February 9, 2011, 6:27 PM  Welcome, . OCD can be scary, and lonely. Guest guest
So sorry she's had such a rough time, . Some have a hard time with the meds. And some do best on a low dose of SSRI, despite OCD typically requiring higher doses than prescribed for depression. I'm glad to hear the CBT/ERP is going well. ) Let us know how the gluten free diet works for her. Glad you found our group. BJ > > > > Hi everyone, I live on Long Island. Guest guest
It depends on the doctor, but yes, they can be very helpful if you find the right one. Mainstream medicine tends to just put bandaids (meds) on everything.. Naturopaths actually understand what causes or triggers certain conditions and disorders and execute appropriate treatment plans to treat the underlying cause.. An example would be fibromyalgia.. A mainstream doctor would prescribe meds, refer to a fibro clinic or pain management clinic, etc. etc.. A naturopath would try to figure out what is causing the fibromyalgia (celiac disease or other autoimmune condition) and treat it with diet modification, supplements, correcting any imbalances in the body, etc. So there is real healing going on instead of just a bandaid.
