Hi folks

I have 2 'bodily function' questions for you.....

1. My period is over a week late, I am now up to day 35 in my cycle

and I normally have a 26-27 day cycle. My periods are normally very

regular (I have been charting my cycle for the last 5 months because

we hope to try for baby #2 next year and I wanted to know where I was

at..... )

I have eliminated being pregnant (did a test this morning which was -

ve) and I am wondering if the Optifast/surgery might have affected my

cycle. Did anyone else have this problem? I have heard of people with

anorexia having problems with their cycle due to malnutrition and

wondered if perhaps a VLCD followed by surgery/GA followed by a

liquid diet could be the cause. Your thoughts please!

2. You may remember I was having problems last week with #2's of a

different kind.... I had some prune juice on Fri and Sat and finally

had a result on Sat afternoon.... but since then I have had

intermittent - but rather explosive diaoreah (sp?) - sorry for TMI!!

I have been drinking Sustagen, homemade soup, fresh squeezed juice,

water, coffee, and Bulla drinking yoghurt. Any ideas what might be

causing it. (Have not had prune juice again since Sat).

When I saw the dietician on Monday she suggested I start taking

Elevit now so that I have plenty of folate if and when I fall

pregnant (we will not be trying till early next year but she said it

was important to start taking it now). I took one of the tablets last

night cut in half and it sat very uncomfortably for about an hour. I

went to the chemist today and bought a tablet crusher as dont want

that to happen again! But, it made me think - once you start eating,

how do you know the difference between a full pouch and a blockage?

Is it pain? what distinguishes it for you?

I had a wisdom tooth out this morning, I needed to have it done and

thought that while I was off on sick leave I may as well do it too...

what a sucker for punishment I am - ouch it hurts!!

wow... sorry about the long post.... questions... questions! you are

very patient with me and I really appreciate your wisdom! :o)

Hi Angel,

I too had the upset tummy and the late

periods, I think it’s just a combination of changes and anesthetic.

Hi Angel,

I had exactly the same problem. After I had the Mirena out mid 2006

my cycle was every 29-30 days - and after the surgery it was all over

the place (i.e. up to 40 days between cycles). BUT, it has normalised

again after about 5 months. I don't think it has much to do with the

VLCD, more with the fact that you just had a major surgery and your

body is coping with it. Give it some time...

As for the Elevit: it contains 800 mcg of folate (recommended dose if

you're planning a pregnancy). If you can't swallow it you might have

a look into Iron melts. The taste like fruit tingles, contain 250 mcg

of folate per tablet (as well as B12 and Vit C) and the recommended

dose is 2 tablets a day. This would bring you up to 500 mcg and when

you add something like 1 Berocca you get another 400 mcg of folic

acid (which is folate). A told us about the iron melts when

we were having lunch at B's place - and I take them ever

since (THANKS again :-)
