Guest guest
I took a look at this article. It smacks of what I call " Revisionist History. " What was the real cause of this environmental contamination? It was not these countries fault. They are very poor countries, where mega corporations go and extract resources and make huge profits on cheap raw materials. These mega corporations have the poor countries compete against each other for the cheapest raw materials. Needless to say, the country that does not protect their environment gets the mega corporation contract. Here is a typical example. Dominican Republic, the site of a " former automobile battery recycling smelter " Are we really to believe that the all old batteries came from the Dominican Republic. Most people in the DR don't have a place to live, yet alone a car. The mega corporation is the one responsible for this environmental disaster - not the Dominican Republic. Here is another The Peruvian mining town of La Oroya, where residents have been exposed to toxic emissions from a poly-metallic smelter; Are we to believe that Peru is a major user of purified silicon and other metals for chip production? Again, the mega corporation is the one responsible for this environmental disaster - not Peru. Here is another: The Russian industrial city of Norilsk, which houses the world's largest heavy metals smelting complex and where more than 4 million tons of cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, arsenic, selenium and zinc emissions are released annually; Russia is a major exporter of raw metal materials. They have been supplying metals to consumer nations, like the US for years to generate cash. They are forced to compete with other 3rd world sources as being the cheapest supplier. Is it Russia fault that US corporations buy cheap metals outside the US so they can make more profit? It is these profit hungry, corporate executives that enrich their personal pockets while ignoring their responsibility to protect the environment. Where is the corporate social ethic? Where is the corporate environmental responsibility? If these corporations bought raw materials ONLY from sources that protected the environment THIS WOULD NOT HAPPEN? But corporations don't do the right thing, they only want money for the elite. What this article SHOULD have listed was the 100 corporations who bought these raw materials and who is REALLY responsible for this pollution.
