Guest guest
Welcome. Here I am lurking in the background again. I was an active member of this board a few years ago. My daughter was also about 13 when diagnosed. Her issues were at first also with washing & germs, etc. They morphed into other obsessions and compulsions over time. Remember - much like anything else, different things will help different people. Our daughter was put on meds (prozac) starting at a very low dose and SLOWLY (<--- this seems to be a key factor) increasing by just 5mg every 6-8 weeks until she reached 20 mg. The medication seemed to quickly clear her mind so she could concentrate on the therapy and fight back the OCD. Some folks don't want to go the meds route. I was one. I was really against putting my daughter on medication. But the OCD finally ran us all down and we did it. I will never regret that decision. She has been off meds and OCD symptom free for about 4 years now and is away at college. As far as a therapist. Yes, you must find one that deals specifically with OCD and the recommended therapies to treat it. ERP is a big one. If they don't engage in ERP, I would definitely look for another therapist. Have you contacted the OCD Foundation and checked their referral list of doctors/therapists? If not, you need to do this. Go to www. ocfoundation.org or email them at _Infor@..._ (mailto:Infor@...) . If you share what area you are in, perhaps someone else on the board may know a good therapist there. Good luck. LT In a message dated 10/7/2010 10:46:17 A.M. Guest guest
We consider ourselves one of the very lucky & Blessed families out there. It all seems so simple and easy when I type an email response -- basically summing up two of the most horrendous years of our lives in a few paragraphs. It all seems so long ago now. The issues my daughter had were especially taxing on me because of the nature of them - most concerned washing (showering, bathing) going to the bathroom. My husband could do little with her and neither could her brother. Although, my sweet son spent many an hour standing at the locked bathroom door talking to his baby sister to calm her down until I could get there. My best piece of advice (IMHO) is to constantly remind yourself that this is NOT your daughter's choice. If she had the power to stop it, she would. That is what the therapy and the meds with help her with. Getting angry and yelling (oh yes, as horrible as that sounds, it will probably happen at least once - you are only human and can only take so much.) You pull yourself back together, hug, kiss (if it's allowed) and apologize. Take care LT In a message dated 10/7/2010 12:50:27 P.M. Guest guest
Hi Shani, Sorry to hear what you are going through. Are these behaviors relatively new? The humming/head movement sounds like it may be a tic? Had your daughter been sick recently - with strep or some other infection? If any of these answers is yes, you should look into PANDAS as well. www.pandasresourcenetwork.org. Also, don't know how far you are from Chicago, but one of the top PANDAS docs is there. His website is also very informative: www.webpediatrics.org. IN the meantime, you may want to get March's book, Talking Back to OCD. She is old enough that you could use the book together. And make sure you get a therapist that does the Exposure Response Prevention therapy. Guest guest
Kara, The head movement and humming is new (she refers to it as " pacing in her mind " ). She has not been sick recently however she had broken out in awful huge welts for months awhile back (since I switched to dye and perfume free everything those have stopped) and now has some dry flaky parts on her neck and inner arms that I am going to have checked out, I have often wondered if it is all connected. Chicago is a long way away unfortunately. I will most definately get that book and thank you! Guest guest
I'd be curious about that rash, too. Strep can infect the skin. Scarlet fever is one type of rash. Impetigo another. There are others. goolge " strep in the skin " and see if any of the pictures look like your daughter welts and flaky skin. Feel free to email me privately if you have any questions. The stakes are too high not to at least explore the idea of PANDAS. Guest guest
BJ Yes, she has been off meds for a few years now. We watch her carefully and even though she doesn't like it, now & then we remind her that she knows what the signs are and that she must be aware if the OCD rears it's ugly head again. She seems to be ok. What originally (we think) set her OCD off was the death of a close friend/neighbor. Just about a year ago, we had another close friend die in a motorcycle accident - it was very hard for her, but no signs of OCD came back. I just keep thanking God for our (and her) good fortune. Glad to hear your son is doing better. LT In a message dated 10/7/2010 6:12:51 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, BJClosner@... writes: Good to see you, LT. Glad things are still going so well for you. Guest guest
Pleasea research PANDAS. www.pandasresourcenetwork.com It is one reason OCD can come on rather quickly. Do yourself and your child a favor and dig deep and don't dismiss it based on one criteria that is not met. If she has it she needs antibiotics. Guest guest
Hi Shani, want to say " welcome! " I see you got a lot of responses already, read through a few. I joined this group years ago when my then 11.5 yr old son - now 21 - began with OCD. I saw where you/others were talking about therapy. Many of the experienced said that when looking for a therapist - or rather trying them out - to give them around 5 sessions and by then they should be beginning some type of " work " on the OCD - exposure & response prevention (ERP) - to start targeting some of the behaviors. As stated, " talk " therapy alone doesn't help OCD. There are some good books out there for kids. The OCD Foundation website has several listed (for parents too!) and you could look at sites like & Noble, etc. Or check your library! The OCD Foundation website also has good information about the therapy needed for OCD, and medications too if you go that route (which can help a lot). I used to go to the book store and just look through books while there. My son didn't have much of the more common behaviors of OCD, such as handwashing, and I'd look thru trying to find something that stated HIS behaviors. But really, once you understand the therapy, you can apply it to any behaviors. I read about the rashes/welts you said she had (anything else?). I would read through information on PANDAS, which is OCD that begins due to the strep virus, but strep can be anywhere in the body, even some " blemish " on the skin (we had a parent whose son had it that way). And you can have strep but not show any, or many, symptoms. And then scarlet fever is a rash related to strep. If it were to be the PANDAS type, the therapy for OCD is still the same - CBT with ERP (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Exposure & Response Prevention). But - if you can find a doctor to help you pursue this - they will first try antibiotics to help, not immediately try one of the prescription medications for OCD. Some sites about PANDAS OCD (which some kids develop tics) - http://www.pandasresourcenetwork.org/ http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6265 Glad you found our group. It's a great place, I think, for support and a place to vent to on those " OCD/child driving me insane " days! single mom, 3 sons , 21, with OCD, Aspergers, dysgraphia > > Hi, I just joined this group in hopes of finding out what I can do to help my 13 year old daughter who is consumed (and consuming me as well) with her rituals! Guest guest
Shani, It is not at all mean to ask the therapist whether she has the expertise you need, and she should be able to tell you if she doesn't. You wouldn't expect an internist (general doctor) to do open heart surgery, so you would look for someone who had the training to do that. It's the same thing in this case.
