My 7 yr old son's doc wants to put him on Intuiv(sp)1mg then 2mg after a week.

he is already on 50mg Zoloft, .50 Risperdal and 3mg meletonin prn at bedtime. He

want to add this new med but not drop any of the old ones. I have been mulling

it over and think it is just too much. I really feel he is pushing this drug on

lots of his patients and it bothers me. My son has OCD, anxiety and PDD-nos and

sensory integration disorder. He is impulsive and that is one of our big

problems but most of it seems to be sensory related. I just have a problem

standing up to the docs because they tend to label you negatively when you do (

heck he already diagnosed me on our first visit. I told him I have a bipoalr

diagnosis and in his notes he says it is borderline personality not bipolar-even

though there is no basis for that!). I feel that my son is so young and maybe

this could help him or maybe he could get bad side effects from it or just be a

Zombie. Am I being too cautious?

Hi ,

I would simply state to the doctor that you feel as though he is on too much

medication and you don't feel comfortable with him adding more.

He is your child, not the doctors. You make the decisions. The doctor cannot

force you to medicate your child!

Hugs

Judy

It depends on the severity of the issues. The zoloft dose

alone is low and perhaps was given to treat

depression/outburts/anxiety . If a parent has Bipolar the child psychiatrists

will be very cautious about increasing the SSRI (zoloft or other types of

anti-depressants) without careful thought about

causing a bipolar episode. The rispedal can be given to BP risk

patients to see if it reduces outburts or helps in other

ways.

I am not sure when the intuiv was added and how much it

helped with attention etc. Did this calm him down at all?

I would expect if this was added for outbursts that the risedal

would help that. Was this given for school issues with attention.

Did it help in that area?

Meletonin is a supplement that you can buy without

a prescription to help with sleep. I am not sure

if this will or won't help. It probably won't

cause problems though. Did you mention

issues with falling asleep? I would expect this

is why this is given.

The doses don't sound too high. It is better

I beleive to keep doses low in young children especially kids with Autism

Spectrum Disorders (more sensitive to side effects)

and add on than increase anyone dose.

With your history of bipolar zoloft may not be increased,

rispedal causes weight gain and also may not be able

to be incresed either. The medication for attentional

issues often increase anxiety in some children (the

stimulatants) so the doctor will be careful with that.

I would try to make sure you understand how the medications

are helping and which ones are not at all.
