Guest guest
Dear Mona-  I don't have OCD but when I am tired I have more difficulty thinking clearly than in the morning. I was that way even before I went through menopause (more joy). Hope this helps  Subject: Re: parents of ocd kids with ocd? Gradual exposure helps me cope. Do any of you notice anxiety symptoms worse at night? I do plan on addressing my anxiety issues this spring with medication. I was so focused on my daughter's care I neglected my own. Pam > > HI > I was just wondering how many parents out there have ocd themselves? I do. Guest guest
yes, the extreme stress of having her rage because any of her hoarded garbage is touched, she is in denial about her hoarding .. sooo stressful i developed tinnitus from her screaming and my ocd will not allow me to stop listening to the tinnitis.. i am sooo emotionally attached to my daughter. it is hard. i asked if she would like to take part in the kids ocd group , she is ten and she flat out refused. i am stressed out homeschooling her and i am overall overwhelmed.. - Re: parents of ocd kids with ocd? My husband, his father, two of his sisters (also one sister's daughter), and his brother have OCD, along with our son. None of them are officially diagnosed, but it became so obvious once I started learning about it. They are hoarders and germaphobes. I suspect my father in law also has Tourettes, since he does face grimacing, shoulder shrugging, and blinking. My husband also does some face grimacing. My husband is on meds, which keeps his anger under control. He has very rigid thinking, along with being a hypochondriac partly due to contamination issues. He becomes horribly frustrated without medication. At times he has self medicated with alcohol. Our son is more severe, but seems to have improved some with maturity, in how he handles things. But, he also is on meds and is continuing ERP therapy. My husband has not helped much with our son's OCD. I've wondered at times if it was because it bothered him to be confronted with, and around, our son's OCD. He doesn't think he has it, but two of our son's therapists felt he did, due to his described behavior. I'm sure the stress of dealing with your daughter's OCD could not be helpful to you. It's VERY stressful coping with a child who has OCD. Do you think stress sets you off, or do you think it is watching her struggle and doing rituals? Or both? Just curious. Guest guest
Hey there! Yes, I have OCD and my daughter (10) does as well. When she first had symptoms my OCD came back stronger as well. For me, increased stress equals increased symptoms for me. Do you take medication? What has been helpful for you in the past? I usually have to go back to coping mode where I know its flaring up. I use the OCD workbook. Helps redirect me and reminds me whats OCD and whats not as it relates to my anxiety. Hang in there! >> To: From: u028021@... Guest guest
I think increased stress equals increased symptoms is a pretty common equation. My dd and I both take Zoloft. Guest guest
My daughters and I all take Luvox. We have taken it for years and it seems to work well for us. I take 200mg a day; Hannah takes 300 mg a day; and take 250 mg a day. It takes a good nine-twelve weeks for it to reach its full benefit but all SSRIs take awhile when it comes to OCD. Guest guest
There are many different meds available now, and yes, they do work although for many it is trial and error. The most commonly used are the SSRI's: Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc. Anafranil is an older drug that can also be effective, but has a higher risk of side effects. I was on Anafranil many years ago and was not really convinced it was working initially, but didn't want to give up as the only other option at the time was Prozac, which I am allergic to. After a number of years, I started trying to decrease my Anafranil dosage and could tell that my anxiety and symptom levels went up. I did finally have some ERP and got off meds, although I went back on Zoloft last summer (primarily for depression due to my dd's OCD) and it has helped with my milder OCD levels too.
