Guest guest
Hello Dr. Geller, My son, 19, doing well for two years now, taking 10mg celexa (reduced from 20mg about 6 months ago), and working ERP daily. Question: Our son has had a spike in his OCD over a specific and charged person issue. He has taken 5mg of celexa during the day twice, and it seemed to help it subside. He does not want to increase his dose because of side effects and I am wondering if it is possible that taking such a dose periodically really can help. I know it doesn't seem logical, but nothing that has happened with our son re medication has ever been explained, so this seemed to be yet another one of those things. I guess I am just wondering if you have any experience with this kind of thing, or any thoughts. Our son truly knows how to work the ERP principles and works them actively. It was not working this time, so after a week I suggested trying increasing his dose. It had an immediate impact, within an hour. The issue remains and he continues to work on it, but the quantity of thoughts and degree of suffering is lessened, so it seems to make sense to just keep doing this. If it no longer works I will suggest he increase the dose back up, although he is not wanting to... We do not have a psychiatrist, medication is given by our family doctor, who really doesn't have expertise with OCD. Just thought I'd get your opinion on this. One other question is, this seems to happen spring and fall, a spike in the OCD. There is a history of bipolar in our family and spring and fall are times when things cycle with mood. Is there a type of OCD that follows this pattern, since light affects serotonin etc??? Thanks for any thoughts. Barb
