Guest guest
Sorry to hear about your accident and sudden hospital stay! Is your hospital stay a result of the accident? It would obviously be better if you knew more about why you were in the hospital. Definitely talk to your daughter about the accident. Ask her about it.... ask her what was the worst/scariest part for her.... remind her that even though there was an accident, everyone walked away & all was OK (assuming it was). This can help her face that fear and see that really it's no big deal. Not knowing what your medical issue is (as I said... accident related?) it's hard to say how to approach that with your daughter. Your attitude and how you handle this will in front of her will be important. Reassure her that you are not worried because you know the doctors are going to take care of whatever the problem is, etc. This is major ERP for you girl. See what the other responses are from the message board.... LT In a message dated 8/15/2010 11:17:21 P.M. Guest guest
I'm sorry you got hurt and I hope you'll be better soon. Perhaps your daughter can get in to see a therapist ASAP to help her work through her anxiety over the incident. Anxious people often think in catastrophic terms which would mean death to someone who was afraid of an accident. You might be able to use this to your advantage. Point out that the worst thing that can happen in an accident is that someone would be killed and that didn't happen in your case (fortunately). Let her know that you'll be home as soon as you find out that you don't need anything more from the doctor. Guest guest
Wow, . I'm sorry this has happened! Yikes! My son's fear is that I will die because he watched me go through cancer. The reality is, I probably will die while he's still young. It's heartbreaking to see what the illness has done to him. What's going to happen when it comes back? I'm going to have this royally screwed up kid/adult! I wish I had some intelligent answers for you, but I don't. I understand what you're saying, and I hope things don't worsen for her. Guest guest
You know, I can see OCD in me as a child, too. I'm not prisoner to it, so I suppose I've worked through my stuff on my own. I remember being in H.S. and being afraid of vomiting. I still am! I remember praying the same thing every night, " Please don't let me throw up until I'm 18. " I still fight off vomiting to this day. I had horrible morning sickness but didn't vomit once. When I get anxious, I always have to know where a trash can is and where the restroom is in case I have to throw up. After surgery, I got very sick and had to go to the ER becuase I couldn't stop vomiting. My worse nightmare come true!! But I was okay. It was awful because let's face it, no one likes vomiting!! But I'm still afraid. Your comment about anxious people thinking in catastrophic terms makes so much sense. I can remember the records I would play over and over again in my head. Interesting. Guest guest
Oh , so sorry you're in the hospital!! Glad it looks like you'll be home in a day or two. Is it because of the accident you're there? (just yes/no, don't have to say anything too personal) Just from what I've read over the years, many times our children actually do well with the " real life " events that OCD is bothering. It's that OCD fear/obsession that it WILL happen that has them OCDing. Then *it* happens and they handle it amazing well, more with typical responses/concerns. Hope that is the case for you!! Humor may help? Depends, some kids hate humor about OCD. But I'd probably try a " well, you can quit worrying about it, finally happened! I'm fine. Guest guest
Hi - hope you are feeling better! We found that " real life " could impact OCD, but often those had little to do with the level of obsession. Hope you can present it to her positively, and that she is doing ok. Let us know how you are doing. in NC > > My 8 year old, with OCD is obsessed with us getting in a car accident. She wont eat before we get in the car, because she is afraid of an accidnet. Guest guest
So true because Matt had the vomiting fear and when he actually had a bug and was sick, he told me how weird it was that he wasn't afraid anymore. OCD fears are not rational. Bonnie > > > > My 8 year old, with OCD is obsessed with us getting in a car accident. She wont eat before we get in the car, because she is afraid of an accidnet. Guest guest
I know i am crazy late on posting this, but i wound up being in the hospital for 6 days. i had surgery, was released, then after being home for 2 days, was back in the hosptial for 1 more day, due to surgery complications. Yes, i was in the hospital, because of the accident. We didnt know that at first, but during surgery, they found some internal damage. She really is struggling. I keep trying to get her in to be seen, but i cant get an appt. I am getting really frustrated. I think i will call today, and just ask if i can speak with her doc. > > > > My 8 year old, with OCD is obsessed with us getting in a car accident.
