Guest guest
It wasn't an inpatient treatment facility . It was for therapy only. IT's a large NYS funded facility and I really wanted to know if anyone had experience with any research or treatment for OCD there with their children. As I mentioned, the psychologist was very indifferent about caring for OCD. Especially hoarding as it is sensitive and needs to be treated at a young age. Her attitude was one of such indifference when my daughter really needs help for hoarding garbage. lisa In a message dated 6/24/2010 11:13:42 P.M. My daughter had been going there for a few months and I was so very disappointed at the quality of child psychology there. I felt the psychologist assigned to her had no passion or interest in treating my 10 year old who hoards garbage. The psychologist could well have been a junior high school guidance counselor rather than someone qualified to treat OCD/hoarding issues for all the advice she gave me, such as " mom, you are the mother, you make the decisions " , WHy do you need a phd in psychology to dish that out? They were very cold, and I felt that we were treated like laboratory mice rather than human beings. The psychologist would not respond when I said that perhaps she needed to actuallly tell my daughter more about herself and break the ice to begin to form a trusting relationship. It was as though I speaking to inhuman machines. ANyone else know this institute? I would not recommend for children with ocd issues at all. They basically said my daughter wouldn't open up because seh had another therapist she sees who is an MSW, who does no type of CBT work at all. TO make it my daughter's fault rather than a LACK of sincere passionate interest on their part is just bad. Guest guest
I don't have experience with them as we live in the DC area, but you need to trust your gut. It doesn't sound like this person has much experience with OCD or hoarding. We took our dd to see Dr. Rapoport for the initial diagnosis. She is a highly regarded expert, who wrote The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Washing, back in the mid to late 1980s. I had high hopes for her. Our dd was 8.5 at the time, did not think she had a problem, and was not cooperative or communicative. Dr. R. basically said your dd doesn't want to cooperate and is behaving badly, there isn't much I can do with her. She just didn't want to be bothered! I was angry and very very disappointed. I thought, you are the expert, can't you at least try to connect with her. We have found better help since. Randy Frost and Gail Steketee are experts on hoarding. Check your local library or Amazon for their books. Don't know if they have treatment recommendations for children, but it might be a place to start. Hang in there and best wishes.
