In the mid-nineties the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO), the Comité Européenne de Normalisation (CEN) and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) agreed on common definitions for the inhalable, thoracic and respirable aerosol penetration fractions. Samplers were required that would meet those same criteria, and protocols were needed to assess their performance. Novel samplers were developed and existing samplers were tested, but the situation has been clouded by critiques of the sampling conventions and the test protocols, and practitioners of industrial hygiene may have had reason to feel confused. This conference is intended to summarize the past fourteen years of research in this area, to present the state-of-the-art situation, to provide consensus recommendations, and to discuss future research needs. The target audience is industrial hygienists and researchers in Government, both federal and State, and academia, and those consulting and working in large and small companies, including insurance carriers. The symposium is intended to address the following topics: Biologically relevant size-selective aerosol sampling criteria Inhalable/thoracic/respirable Limits on the scope of application (wind speeds, particle sizes) Sampler testing criteria and test beds Inhalable sampling, including Organic dusts (e.g. wood, flour, pesticides) Metals (e.g. nickel, lead and beryllium) Comparisons of inhalable samplers Thoracic sampling, including Oil mists, Acid mists, Fibers and Sensitizers Respirable sampling, including Silica, Welding fume Nanoparticle sampling, including Diesel exhaust Bioaerosol sampling Standards development The program is designed to provide a forum for presenting and discussing current issues of concern. Open discussion will follow each presentation. Attendance at the conference will allow you to meet the authors and pose questions and concerns directly to them. Citations of the work presented may be made only with the written permission of the authors. A full program with titles and authors will be made available on the ASTM website in April 2007. Information on registration and hotel accommodations will also be provided on the ASTM website at http://www.astm.org/ under the heading of " Symposia and Workshops. " CALL FOR PAPERS Submissions are invited for full papers or posters on any of the above topics. Because this Conference is directed at education and standards development, summary presentations of work previously presented or published will be considered. Please send a preliminary abstract (250-300 words) to the Conference Chair at mharper@... by March 1st, 2007. The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work. It is anticipated that most presentations will be oral, but posters will be considered. Please indicate with the abstract submission which format is preferred. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------\ ----------------------------- END Forwarded by Cutz, CIH (Wednesday, November 29, 2006)
