Guest guest
Diane, The usual dose for a child 's age would be 5 mg, but you can start her with 3 mg and see if that does the trick. You can add one or more of the 300 mcg. tablets to the 3 mg. dosage, if necessary. Also, it's important to take weeklong breaks from melatonin every 6 weeks or so, to keep the dosage effective. > Hi all, > > I want to try on Melatonin for sleep issues since being > off a > low dose of Mellaril. Guest guest
Hello Diane, I give my 14-yo daughter (130 pounds) a 1 mg chewable tablet 30 minutes before bed, and that knocks her out for the night. My 11-yo son (110 pounds) takes 1.5 mg (I cut the 3 mg tablets in half for him b/c he doesn't like the chewables). Three mg is too much for me, and I definitely outweigh them. :-) Rather than starting with a larger dose, I suggest starting with a smaller dose and working up gradually until you find the amount that has your daughter sleeping through the night. Guest guest
My peds doc told me to take a 3mg tablet and cut it in half.  I have been giving him on occasion 1.5 mgs since he was 3 and he's almost 7 now.  My daughter gets 1/4 of it when she needs it and she's four. I had the same concerns when we started giving it to both our kids (son has aspergers and daughter has OCD) but after a lot of research, it was proven safe for kids in low doses.  After talking to their doc, he said that usually 1 mg is plenty for a child under the age of six but then 1.5-2 mgs is good for six and up depending on body weight.  My son is tall for his age, but not heavy, so he has to take the higher dose.  Hope that helps  And don't worry about giving too much--if you were, she'd already start to have side effects.  Remember, our bodies produce melatonin on a regular basis anyway, the pills are just an added bonus for those who can't make enough.  Works great on parents too! hahah  Good luck! Karin I touch the future---I teach. -Christa McAuliffe Subject: Melatonin Dosage To: Date: Wednesday, July 21, 2010, 8:09 AM  Good morning parents of amazing children. Three nights and counting! Yesterday I tried not giving her the melatonin to see if she would calm down at bed time and go to sleep with just the cuddles and books, and, well that didn't work. I am curious though; does anyone know what dosage is too much for a 5 year old? We are giving her 3mg at night in a dissolvable pill, but I've read that 3mg is for adults and I don't want to be harming her just so I can get some quiet time. thnx rakhi
Guest guest
I don't know what the usual dose for kids is, but if you have Trader Joe's near you, you can get chewable mint-flavored melatonin that is either 0.5 or 1 mg per tablet so you can tailor your dosage to what she needs. My kids take either 1 or 2 of the TJ's tablets for sleep. Guest guest
So I got a pill splitter and gave her 1/4 of a dosage...man that did not work, but I think that as the rest of her routine was off she was not calm enough for it to take effect. I will keep trying the 1/4 dosage to see how things go. I'm just worried that I'll have to give it to her every night for years. I guess this is the whole " trial and error " part of OCD and anxiety. thank you rakhi
Guest guest
Since 3mg worked well, maybe you should work your way down to find the right dose. Maybe give 2.5 for a few days, then 2, then 1.5... You might also find that the dose will depend on the day. If her routine is off, or her anxiety is high she might need a higher dose, but on calm days a lower dose will be enough. > > So I got a pill splitter and gave her 1/4 of a dosage...man that did not work, but I think that as the rest of her routine was off she was not calm enough for it to take effect.
