Guest guest
I would not start your daughter off on the 3mgs. I tried that not knowing and they got terrible headaches and held their heads and my verbal daughter would say, I sick Mamma. So even though you have the bottle already I would save it for as she gets older, because sometimes the effectiveness of melatonin wears off over time and then you need to up the dose. But for now I would start her at either .5 half of the 1mg or 1mg, nothing more. If the .5 does nothing then the next day or two try the 1mg if that still doesn't seem to work try the 1.5 (half of the 3mg tablet, but I would not try her in the beginning with 3mgs. I am probably heavier than most of the people on this post and I only take 1mg and it knocks me out, so be careful with this stuff. But then my husband has taken 5mgs and it barely works for him. Good luck and let us know what happens. It has been a miracle for my family. We can actually get some sleep, because our kiddos sleep. And I had insomnia and I can sleep now too, so I am a strong advocate of it, but I still think starting off smaller is better. Hope this helps, Esther --- pjordan831 wrote: > Hello Diane, > > I give my 14-yo daughter (130 pounds) a 1 mg > chewable tablet 30 > minutes before bed, and that knocks her out for the > night. Guest guest
I didn't know you could cut the 3 mg. pill (not chewable). You can? Diane (CHristina's Mom) Re: Melatonin Dosage Hello Diane, I give my 14-yo daughter (130 pounds) a 1 mg chewable tablet 30 minutes before bed, and that knocks her out for the night. My 11-yo son (110 pounds) takes 1.5 mg (I cut the 3 mg tablets in half for him b/c he doesn't like the chewables). Three mg is too much for me, and I definitely outweigh them. :-) Rather than starting with a larger dose, I suggest starting with a smaller dose and working up gradually until you find the amount that has your daughter sleeping through the night. Guest guest
I've been keeping up with this thread for a few days now and did some trial and error research of my own and discovered that Melatonin at a 1/4 mg-1/2 mg dose works wonders on a child with Aspergers to help calm their symptoms during the day without making them tired! My son has Aspergers and I wondered if it would help during the day. Â After a few days of trying it out, I found that he is 100% calmer and a lot more loving without the tiredness a whole dose will give him. Â This works a lot better than any meds i've tried with him. Â Just passing on a bit of info! Karin I touch the future---I teach. -Christa McAuliffe Subject: Re: Melatonin Dosage To: Date: Saturday, July 24, 2010, 1:09 PM Â Since 3mg worked well, maybe you should work your way down to find the right dose. Maybe give 2.5 for a few days, then 2, then 1.5... You might also find that the dose will depend on the day. If her routine is off, or her anxiety is high she might need a higher dose, but on calm days a lower dose will be enough. > > So I got a pill splitter and gave her 1/4 of a dosage...man that did not work, but I think that as the rest of her routine was off she was not calm enough for it to take effect. I will keep trying the 1/4 dosage to see how things go. I'm just worried that I'll have to give it to her every night for years. I guess this is the whole " trial and error " part of OCD and anxiety. > > thank you > rakhi >
Guest guest
I want to jump in here and say that I take .5 mg of melatonin every night as well. When I take more, it doesn't work nearly as well. The way I take it is about 30 minutes prior to the time I want to go to sleep, then I read until I'm tired. Works really well. If I take it and then just keep doing things around the house, it doesn't work for me at all. I have to relax. Dina
