Hi Felicia, welcome!

Here are a few books for parents:

Freeing your Child from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

by Tamar E. Chansky, Ph.D.

Helping Your Child With OCD

by Lee Fitzgibbons, Ph.D., and Cherry Pedrick, R.N.

Talking Back to OCD: The Program That Helps Kids and Teens Say " No Way " - and

Parents Say " Way to Go "

by S. March, M.D.

What to do When Your Child Has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Strategies and

Solutions

by Aureen Pinto Wagner, Ph.D.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Help for Children and Adolescents

by Mitzi Waltz

There are books for children/teens out there too, she may like to read some.

Also, this page has a lot of short articles with good information, there's

probably some she can relate to:

http://westsuffolkpsych.homestead.com/articles.html

I have a son, now 21, whose OCD began in 6th grade. He suffers from " bad

thoughts " although his OCD is the scrupulosity type, relating to God/religion,

etc. When it first began years ago, it was more the ritual/compulsion type.

We've had our ups/downs with OCD over the years. He would be doing better now,

I think, if he would go on medication again (he refuses, wants to deal with it

himself) but he has managed well overall.

Feel free to ask any questions here, this is also a great place to vent about

OCD!

The throat-clearing and coughing might be considered a vocal tic..

Throat-clearing is the most common vocal tic.. so she could also have a tic

disorder along with the OCD, which is very common (my daughter has both).

You will want to read up on PANDAS and also Gut & Psychology Syndrome to see if

any of it applies to your daughter.

Thanks for the great list of books. Will definitely be hitting up Amazon this

week. It's a frustrating situtation because we only have step daughter on the

weekends. Found out recently her mother is helping her with some of her

compulsions to ease her embarrasment. For example she pumps the soap dispenser

exactly eight times, found out Mom is pumping and counting for her. Might have

to pass along some of this reading material to her mother to make her see how

she is not really helping.

Misty,

Thanks for the good advice. Did read up on PANDAS and I don't think it applies.

She hasn't been sick and she has had the throat clearing thing for a long time.

We just thought it was allergies. It wasn't until she started with the thoughts

of hurting herself and reading about OCD that we came across the vocal tic

information. Wow, this is all a lot to take in. Trying to figure out the best

way to help her. I am in the school of thought that says " treat her as normal as

possible still and do not lower expectations " and the husband is in the camp of

" don't bug her about school, chores, manners, etc. because she has so much to

deal with right now. " Not sure which one of us is right.

Thanks BJ, this is all so overwhelming...it's nice to know there are other folks

who have been where we are.

Definitely treat her as normal as possible.. However, tread carefullly around

OCD issues.. For example.. My daughter has a major germ phobia and she cannot

take out the trash (or even look at it or touch it)..  So I have been having

her touch the side of the trash can before she is allowed to get on the

computer.  Just to keep that exposure to the trash going without making her

take out the trash just yet.  She takes Zoloft, but she really needs therapy as

well.. She is doing behavior therapy twice a week right now along with her two

sisters (they all have Asperger's) so we do not have time for another therapy,

plus we have yet to find a therapist who does CBT/ERP with children.

But even with Asperger's, Tourette's, OCD, etc. etc..  All my girls are

required to do chores, regular school work (we homeschool), etc. etc.  My 7yr

old daughter has severe Asperger's, severe ADHD, and severe OCD.. She is not

exempt from anything!  (though she is not required to do as much

" seatwork " -type school as a neurotypical 7yr old child would in a public

school.. I have to get creative and work with her in different ways).

Definitely look into Gut & Psychology Syndrome as well.. I had my girls tested

for food intolerances/sensitivities, and they all came back highly sensitive to

gluten, casein, & soy.  Since removing these foods, we no longer have any tics

and behavior has improved dramatically.

I want to second the suggestion for reading up on PANDAS. Go to

Latitudes.org and click on FORUM and read the faq sheets there. Also

another good website is www.pandasresourcenetwork.org OCD and tics can be

caused by strep. It's important to seek treatment with a physician who is

knowledgable in treating PANDAS. Wishing I had pursued this more adamantly

4 years ago as we are only now getting the proper treatment and it has been

going on (and getting worse) for almost 4 years. Don't rule it out based on

one or two things not fitting the criteria. Read and exhaust the

possibility.
