Guest guest
I have worked on legislation on the state level, I can't do it for now, it's too painful seeing the political system at work. I still send emails, faxes, make phone calls when I read about a bill that needs support or condemnation. I also have done some media interviews, my fav was being on a local radio show for a few hrs while people called in. That was a blast. I think my biggest thing I'm doing for the autism cause is going to college to be a nurse practitioner to be an autism practitioner. I'll be finished with that in 4 yrs, but gag, I have to be at school at 8am to start summer classes... boo. I'm also for the moment (don't know how much longer) on the local ASA board of directors. I also teach an Autism 101 workshop once a month for newly-diagnosed families. It's 2 hrs and I touch on what autism is, biomedical, behavioral/educational, family/coping, and a resource list. I've been toying with the idea of doing a gfcf diet workshop because there are so many who want to start but can't find people who understand their kid may need something completely different from the next kid. But since Allie doesn't follow it anymore I don't feel as up on things. I may wait until I'm a RN & do it for a small fee, there's only so much time in a day that I can help without hurting the family, and I have felt I might be crossing that line. I also have a myspace site I occasionally do autism stuff about, I'm currently putting up some new stuff about autism. www.myspace.com/debityree Debi
Guest guest
I did not ask her to apologize. I did wonder if she felt different after some time had passed since she posted the orginal statement about autism speaks. I saw her post in the beginning and I went to the source. Had I not seen her post I would not have gone to the source. I too had some concerns over the video. Alison explained it to me. I think a number of mothers get stressed out -I know that i do. I do not think it was this group but I saw where a family was asked to leave a applebees. I called that applebee and there had been more to the story. I like going to the source. However I could not get in touch with the family in question. My point as I said before was to find out what people are doing in the autism realm. Thats all. I am outspoken. My life has lead me to a point where critism does not touch me as it once had. So I sometimes phrase things in a insensitive way. BUt I live and learn. - Thank you for your comments Debi wrote: She shouldn't apologize for saying how she felt any more than you should. It's how she felt. She obviously wasn't happy about feeling that way. The parents that murdered their children didn't do so because of some stupid video, they did it because they were sick, evil, what ever. For someone to murder their own child because of a video would equate to like a 10 IQ, it just doesn't happen. Debi --------------------------------- Looking for a deal? Guest guest
I was referring to Kassi's assertion that the woman who said she once thought about killing herself and her daughter should apologize. My point is that she was just saying how she felt, if it's okay for one person to say how they feel (Kassi) then it should be okay for others (Alison). I think it was obvious from the AS video that she was talking about a very sad time in her life, but for someone with autism like Kassi, it might be more difficult to pick up on. That's cool you always try to go to the source. Like the saying, there's usually 3 sides to every story, his side, her side, & the truth. Guest guest
the truth to be is that she is of right to her feelings at the tijme and autism can be of so fearful and overwhelming to some parents. it maybe maked her feel at this being the only out for fear of her own daughters outcomes and fear of what her daughter woudl endure which is of painful as those with spectrum already know. it was her heart pleas in this autism monster things that is if the fear in the early journey and rightfully so for some. Greif is a horrible clutching emotion that sometimes clings to us in socu pervasive ways it leaves the victim stuch and unable to move on for a long time. Many with spectrum shout out their thinking without regards to the impact of others because it is of a surging need to expel it and so maybe with her she felt the pains so intense she was of honest it does not mean in my thinking she had full want within her to act out her emotional surging , it was just her internal need to save her daughter from her own perspectives of her life outcomes. For me I to stand by the video in its " self " because it is of to me the reality I to see daily in autism from family perspectives , and community and professional perspectives as well. But I to not fully support of the cause of the autism speaks goals. I to love of their commercials as I to feel it impacts the community in a very defined way to get attention for autism thinking for those not yet affected by it. Anyways autism is of a broad spectrum and not all will make of the samegains I to ahve maked or others here to be of voice or speak out, some are greatly consumed by their chqallenges and barriers in autism that leaves them disabled in a very profound way and for this group I to be of to focus much too in my speakings because they cannot be forgotten in the needs and services they will continue to need life long. they are what tugs of my heart to keep doing what I to do and it brings me a happy feeling if can give to them in some way to make of their life even for a day better. This does not equate I to have no sympathy for the higher end, that is of not so as they may have of very similar needs but not always as intense in all the core areas. Their needs are not as much into the daily living skills ( although some do)as they are in realms of social isolations and socail negative reactions from others and the sole rejection of trying to interact. It becomes a place of social desertion where they give up trying and or no longer hold an interest in pursuing of friends and that can be a devastating place for some who want of that in the lives of them. Anyways need to go to get of shower and get of my day going. Sondra

Guest guest
Y'all DO know that stating intent to kill is a crime in most states, right? As in, FELONY. Think what you will but thinking and stating are 2 different things. Go talk to your therapist, not a video. It is not cool, it is not courageous, it is disturbing. But Alison is above that because HER kid is autistic and theyre RICH. If I stated that I wanted to pop people on the head for saying moronic things about autism Id be arrested for disorderly conduct. Double standard much? --- Debi wrote: > I was referring to Kassi's assertion that the woman > who said she once > thought about killing herself and her daughter > should apologize. Guest guest
She didn't state an intent to kill, she stated feelings of thinking about. She didn't say " I'm going to kill her, " she said, " I thought about killing her but didn't. " Not that it's great that she thought it. I for one am not celebrating or defending her thoughts. There is no double standard. If you said, " When I was 17 I thought about killing my mother because we were going through a horrible time... " it would be no different. Nor would you be arrested for disorderly conduct by making your statement, I hear people say far worse all the time. Heck, was it Alec Baldwin who said someone should kill President Bush?
