While i to understand the intense challenges autism can be for some it is never acceptable to announce it publically or in veiw of the child it is being directed over. Many with autism do grasp more internally than they can epxress outwardly and to assume she didnot understand those words is sad. It maked me feel sad for that little girl. But the other families many I to had advocated for were of this level of needs and care. many were bolters, this presents a safe factor and this causes the family somuch fear and prolonged stress and anxiety over the fear of their child being lost, hurt or be killed by some unknown fate of bolting away and finding danger that can and often does consume them such as drowing or being hit by cars or freezing to death slow cruel deaths for some....Autism can be a monster at times if the family and or persons with autism do not have of correct supports that MATCH their needs to exist in this world safely and with dignity. So Autism itself is not the monster but lack of true support by soceity and systems locking those in need out is..... Guest guest
Sondra, Thank you for putting into words what I have wanted to say, but to be honest was afraid to say for fear of offending those on our list who are diagnosed with autism. My boys are high functioning and I would not want to " get rid " of their autism. It is a part of them, and I cannot imagine them without it. It would be nice if they had some friends, and were not so anxiety ridden, but some would say that is what makes them part of who they are. My daughter is more severe, she is a bolter, she has no awareness of safety, she has some pretty extremely ingrained rituals, and she is very " vocal " when things don't go her way. For my son with noise sensitivities, her tantrums bring him to tears and he literally is fearful of her when she is like this. I would welcome any help, whether " they " call it a " cure " , I really could not care less. Some days I have just had it with cleaning feces off the carpet, locking every door several times with alarms too, trying to understand what she is thinking so I can help her prepare for any changes or new situations, and watching how cruel my son's classmates can be to them. I agree it was in poor taste to mention taking someone else's life because they just can't handle it anymore, but some of us are not as well equipped as others to handle the stresses of daily life, let alone a life with more than your average challenges. Luckily, I am doing okay. We have a terrific sense of humour in this house, and I have discovered, as virtually non-verbal as she is, my daughter has a wicked sense of humour and is such a tease. I look forward to the day when we can communicate better, and I can only hope that she will be able to communicate and function in our society, such that it is at times, as well as Sondra. Thank you Sondra, for your words of wisdom. You definately got a " blue gumball " this time. > >Reply-To: Autism_in_Girls >To: Autism_in_Girls >Subject: Re: Fw: [nsasa] Autism Speaks Video >Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2007 23:50:56 -0000 > >I to alck knowing who the person is to be of the mother day killings >but I to know of the video in question and I to ahve opposite views. > >While I tonot be to seek cures or support of that thinking as a >whole, I to found the video very good in the sense of showing the >real challenges families are facing with autism when it comes to >those who are more challenged or involved and to me is shouts these >families feqars and lives daily , it is not to say that some with >mild or more higher levels of ability are not also great challenges >at time to understand and support within the home too but I to think >we often overlook the more challenging aspects of autism and by to >dismiss it does these families little service at all.But in the parts >I tonot agree to is the thinking of feeling safe to verbalized the >wanting of to take of the life of their child simply because they >could not understand, cope and it was too much for the family . Guest guest
You know I have to say something. I would change my daughter if there was a magic wand, and I don't care who likes it or not. I would also change my older daughter who has extremely bad vision and while I'm at it I'd take away my son's asthma too. Of course I would always want my daughter to be who she is, but I wish for her all the things she sees her sister do. My daughter has medical problems as well as significant muscle weakness so she can never keep up with kids her age even if she did have friends which she doesn't. So Yes, I would change that. I would like for her life to be easier, I would like for her not to cringe when I touch her and I would like for her to cry sometimes, but laugh most others. I do kind of get peed off when I hear people get offended about parents who insist they wouldn't change things if they could. I would. And of course I love her just the way she is, is that ever in doubt? I love all my children warts and all, as they love me. As any good mother though, I wish them a perfect little life. The difference between misery and happiness is knowing the difference between wishing and reality and when to let go of some things. I think we all let go when we are ready. My grandmother said " To each his own " I think we are all dealing in our own way and should just support each other. Guest guest
can only speak of this life because had lived of the life of a much so called LFA person much of the life of me and no clue what caused the gains over life but by teen years was moving up in gains of life skills and functioning. as complex as autism is I to lack how this was to be for me and for some others on spectrum to emerge and make gains without the use of a good program or supports. It was like my brain was slowly waking up from a long dream state. Not cured or normal but did make gains and so this is why I to refer to self as HFA now instead of just autism even though my being meets the criteria for autism and not so much aspergers I to still can appear at times like one with aspergers in certain areas of the life of me. Do I to think " autism speaks " speaks for me . I to think no one really speaks for me except for self now that I to discovered good outlets to get it out. But I to think as a child yes autism speaks video much would be to have shown of the life of me as young girl until late teens or early adult years. I to think the video speaks for many on autism as far as presentaion and real issues in life, but I to not think it clearly speaks for {ALL} with spectrum. It does not represent of me now as adult person but from my knowings of many with autism families I to know it represnets many of their current struggles and lives. Do I to support and agree with it completely of all they say or do NO for to do so will be to dismiss the spectrum as a whole. " Autism speaks " , speaks for a portion of the whole. I to think the one new show on autism they had of recently on tv where they showed of 3 different young men with spectrum did a much nicer job in displaying how very different spectrum can manifest itself in levels of functionion, but the truth is they were of all of older and this is of somethings that is needed too. I to be to bet the difference in then all as young kids to their teen years you will be to see huge variations of gains and skills they have achieved over the years . a from then to now point of view or perspectives is somethings that is of missing to show of the devlopmental gains and such from onset to maturing ages. If this wqas of done to many on spectrum it would be hard to tell that each was of the same person now. Many to assume what they see, and or understand of their very small childrens of autism is what they get all of life and this is not always a set given to autism. some will make measuable gains while others will make so many gains it will be hard to know they are even of spectrum. My missy is of a clear example of this and she is of only 13 but she has many hidden challenges that are of spectrum in nature but does not present in autistic fashions anymore in ways that are detected and or noted quickly by untrained eyes. Guest guest
I know this is a real real late reply. But I emailed Alison and I got a reply. She basically said she was so upset about the lack of help in the schools and lack of help period that she was so very frustrated. She helps so many and meets so many closed doors. I am grateful for people like her. She said those comments in question were born out of frustration. What have you said that was rash and severe? Are you always perfect? I have said some horrific things. Alison is human. She manages to help so many people -What do you do? I try to spread awareness on my myspace page. I inform mothers of what I went through with Athena on her vaccine reaction. She was hospitalized. I had saved your post because I was going to try to contact her and ask her about " the situation " . I did -did you? She replied to me. Just wanted to pass my thoughts along. Perhaps you have different thoughts by now on this situation. Mother of Ariel and Athena 4yr old beauty on the spectrum Kassi wrote: McCarron, age 3, murdered mothers day. Guest guest
Just want to pop in and give my 2 cents. I can understand things being said out of frustration, but my understanding about Autism Speaks is that they want to find the gene that causes Autism (if there is one) so that people can do prenatal screening to prevent children with autism. Which I am totally against. Just wondering if you have heard anything about that in your research? They also want to CURE autism, which I'm also not for, but as I said, that is just MY opinion. However I will say they are doing a wonderful job of spreading awareness, but maybe they should try to show some of the happier sides of autism. I for one, LOVE just the way she is, and there have been wonderful things that she has said or done that I dont' think an NT person would have come up with! angela utley wrote: I know this is a real real late reply. Guest guest
While it's true that some people might use prenatal screening to terminate a pregnancy, that is not always the case. Genetics underlie everything about us. Some children who are autistic were born with a genetic predisposition that prevents proper detox and metabolism of toxins, particularly those found in vaccines (not just mercury but many other adjuvants and additives). This is why two children can receive the same vaccines and react differently. Having this knowledge may be useful for parents in determining whether or not to vaccinate or to give an altered vaccine schedule, if they so choose. It would also alert them to the effects of toxic exposures in-utero and thereafter. Not all pre-natal genetic tests have to lead to termination of a pregnancy. The more knowledge, the better prepared we can be. > Just want to pop in and give my 2 cents. > > I can understand things being said out of frustration, but my > understanding about Autism Speaks is that they want to find the > gene that causes Autism (if there is one) so that people can do > prenatal screening to prevent children with autism. Guest guest
I totally understand and agree with what you are saying , both about the prenatal testing and that you distance yourself from them, as do I. I know when I was PG with Beth we got that one test back saying she had Downs, we got an amnio to find out for sure, just so we would know ahead of time and be able to plan acordingly, but given that same circumstance now, I wouldn't even bother with the amnio. cathylynn2 wrote: And for the record, I not in accordance with Autism Speaks, and in fact distance myself from them entirely. Guest guest
I think it is good that Autism Speaks is doing research. Autism is also genetic in my family though Athena had a extreme vaccine reaction. My point is what are we doing as a community to promote awareness. I personally would like to see something in the way of a cure as it would make life some much easier for Athena. Her case is not as severe as others. I am grateful. I consider my child complete. I just want to experience all dimensions of her. I have some poetry at Myspace page under angela utley in Oklahoma . Theres only two. I am now trying to wheedle out info from a friend that worked at Mereck. What would you ask him? I believe he worked with flu vaccines. What are some of the things people in this group personally due to promote autism awareness? Legislation? Rallies? I am curious ? It is hard to standby on the sidelines. I sometimes say the wrong things but I try. - cathylynn2 wrote: While it's true that some people might use prenatal screening to terminate a pregnancy, that is not always the case. This is why two children can receive the same vaccines and react differently. Having this knowledge may be useful for parents in determining whether or not to vaccinate or to give an altered vaccine schedule, if they so choose. Guest guest
But I asked her. She was kind of enough to respond. There are many sides to a story. I too could claim to hold a grudge. Unfortunately for the same things. I was born into a political family. Even my doctor was a pedophile . I had no one to turn to when I was a young girl. NO one would believe me. So I too was written off! But we control our adult lives. You never answered me about contacting her. I assume you are busy as am I. I am waiting for another referral for myself in regards to my aspie behavior. I truly relate to my younger daughter more. But part of my point was to find out what people are doing in the way of autism awareness. What is your platform? Things like that. You raised a good point about autism speaks. I contacted her. She responded. Your words lack merit (in my opinion) about Alison .. You did not go to the source. Think twice about using your abuse that should not have happened to you as a gun crutch. - Kassi wrote: When she publicly apologizes rather than having her pet producer call her 'brave', stops demonizing autistic people, and starts listening to us...
Oh wait. I'm only human. Humans have an unfortunate tendency to hold grudges. Especially humans with histories of abuse that leaves them unable to have normal adult relationships (p.s. that means multiple rapes in more than one orifice for many years, like 8 of them) that were written off because they were neurologically goofy kids. If I had knifed the offending parent in the offending organ, Id be in jail. And last I checked, kiddie rape and kiddie killing are both higher crimes than self defense OR being autistic. She gets 150K/year to bitch about Jodie. Hell no I don't have different thoughts, nor will I. She should have had her kids put into foster care for that. Guest guest
She shouldn't apologize for saying how she felt any more than you should. It's how she felt. She obviously wasn't happy about feeling that way. The parents that murdered their children didn't do so because of some stupid video, they did it because they were sick, evil, what ever. For someone to murder their own child because of a video would equate to like a 10 IQ, it just doesn't happen. Debi

Guest guest
I have worked on legislation on the state level, I can't do it for now, it's too painful seeing the political system at work. I still send emails, faxes, make phone calls when I read about a bill that needs support or condemnation. I also have done some media interviews, my fav was being on a local radio show for a few hrs while people called in. That was a blast. I think my biggest thing I'm doing for the autism cause is going to college to be a nurse practitioner to be an autism practitioner. I'll be finished with that in 4 yrs, but gag, I have to be at school at 8am to start summer classes... boo. I'm also for the moment (don't know how much longer) on the local ASA board of directors. I also teach an Autism 101 workshop once a month for newly-diagnosed families. It's 2 hrs and I touch on what autism is, biomedical, behavioral/educational, family/coping, and a resource list. I've been toying with the idea of doing a gfcf diet workshop because there are so many who want to start but can't find people who understand their kid may need something completely different from the next kid. But since Allie doesn't follow it anymore I don't feel as up on things. I may wait until I'm a RN & do it for a small fee, there's only so much time in a day that I can help without hurting the family, and I have felt I might be crossing that line. I also have a myspace site I occasionally do autism stuff about, I'm currently putting up some new stuff about autism. www.myspace.com/debityree Debi
