Guest guest
Lol. Guam? I think Allie still has a ways to go before she starts, she's not showing any signs other than possibly some beginning buds. I still think she has some unknown metabolic issue that might make her start late, she's still so small. She turned 8 this week and a friend 3 mos older than her is over a head taller, as is virtually all 8 & 7 yr-olds for that matter. Allie's a year behind in school and still slightly shorter than most of them. <sigh>
Guest guest
Just a suggestion for you…start having your daughter wear panty liners so she gets used to having something in her panties. Also her pediatrician can assess when she’s getting closer to her period. They have some kind of scale which includes body odor, pubic hair and underarm hair and breast development. I thought my daughter would be a mess as she was so frightened of having a bloody nose, but when it actually came, she was very accepting of it. _____ From: Autism_in_Girls [mailto:Autism_in_Girls ] On Behalf Of Micci_Rog Sent: Saturday, July 28, 2007 6:09 PM To: Autism_in_Girls Subject: Re: I'm trying to stay calm, but... I was just going to write a post on the puberty topic. My dd, Jordan, is almost 11. she is very thin and underweight, so I was kind of hoping puberty would stay away. I was a late bloomer and so was my mom. but the other day, I was getting her dressed and smelled the BO smell coming from her armpits. *sigh* I'm hoping she doesn't get her period though, until age 14 like me, or even 16 like my mother. Like Debi, I thought she would be higher functioning by this age, but she still struggles with hygeine issues. She is toilet trained for years, but she still forgets essential steps like wiping, flushing and making sure her undies are neatly in her pants. so what is she going to do with maxi-pads? Guest guest
Our girls see an endocrinologist for thyroid problems. He told us that you can guestimate when menses will start based on when breast buds appear. He said it's usually 2 years from that point. So, that's what we've gone by. Guest guest
That's exactly what my dd's pediatrician said last month, when she did Allie's yearly physical for camp. She asked if I'd like to have a breast exam done to get an opinion on whether Allie was beginning puberty. Allie said it was OK. She's had the " development " video at school so she could give informed consent. She understood that we wanted to estimate when her period might start. The pediatrician says Allie hasn't even started breast buds yet at age 12, so we have two whole years to go at least - Yipee! I thought Allie was beginning to develop last fall, but she turned out to just be gaining some weight before a growth spurt. I really have trouble telling the difference between body weight and breast buds. Sandi (Allie's Mom) Houston In a message dated 7/30/2007 9:53:22 P.M. Guest guest
I think that's only an estimate, though. I had breast buds 4 years before my period, and a friend only had them a year. Debi

Guest guest
That's what I meant, that it's hard to tell the difference between body fat and breast buds. I thought Allie was starting to " develop " twice over the past four years. Each time, she shot up and added 2 inches to her height - burning all her excess body fat. Suddenly, no more development! Guest guest
It seems to me what happens when it REALLY happens (cause I didn't know for the longest because of body fat, too) is that the areolas get enlarged & start protruding at first without much enlargement of surrounding tissue for a while. If it's from fat, the entire breast area seems to get bigger. I don't know if this helps or not, it seems to be how I've told the diff.
