Thanks, Matt You beat me too it. I was searching for a couple online to reference that I had seen and looks like you found the one I thought was best. All asthmatics should be provided an asthma action plan according to best practice guidelines for asthma specialists if the doctors are not providing this then they are not many the standards and should be getting with the program."Matt Anders, RRT, AE-C, CPFT" wrote: An astham action plan is a

plan on how to manage your astham and what to do in the event of an astham attack. There are many different of action plan worksheets out there. Find one and use it. It helps you know what your medications are, what they are for, and when to use them. Some action plans have areas for you to chart your peak flows every day. Daily peak flow reading are recommended for good astham control. Here are some links to action plans.... http://www.lungusa.org/atf/cf/%7B7A8D42C2-FCCA-4604-8ADE-7F5D5E762256%7D/AAP.PDF http://www.aaaai.org/members/allied_health/tool_kit/handouts/my_action_plan.pdf http://www.noattacks.org/AsthmaActionCardStudent.pdf > > > > >> > > > > > I was born with asthma and allergies. No, I don't have an asthma action plan. I've had asthma for 57 years,

so I feel I'm pretty well tuned in to my body and know what my flow is

without using a meter. I use the Albuterol every day, not

reactively--but preventatively. It is a non-steroidal bronchial

dilator. I prefer it to steroids like Flovent and Advair (although it

looks as if I'll have no choice, now). I've been on Albuterol since

1986 and use it sparingly and have been virtually asthma-free for all

these years...able to ride horses, load in hay, clean stalls, mow

pastures, etc. It's only since " the change " that I've been noticing

more symptoms and those generally are brought about by stressful

situations (my husband's battle with cancer, his death, etc.).

I have looked into prescription assistance. I was overwhelmed by the

paperwork and by the necessity to turn in copies of three years' worth

of my income taxes (which are lengthy since I have my own business). I

may give it another go, however, since I'm now headed to spend $223/mo

for Flovent and HFC Albuterol.

Your concern is valid. Private employers are increasingly slicing

health care coverage. And many elderly people are having to choose

between their prescriptions and air-conditioning or groceries.

Go see a doctor immediately. Go to the emergency room to see one if

you have to. Asthma tends to escalate if you try to ignore it.

confirmation on the nebulizer...whenver you have an emergency situation thats pretty much what they do. It's pretty common to have them at home now. Lorna wrote: Hi I was just in the hospital for a day cause of my asthma attack. Only thing they used in the hospital is the nebulizador machine with ipratropium bromide and albuterol sulfate solution. To get the medication down to my lung what inhaler can not. I felt that I could do this all at home so now I am buying the

machine so I don't have to be in the hospital. There is not much can do when people sick. I gotten the flue shot. But the main thing I have to do for myself is to stay away the things that will tiger it. Like water slides, water gets into my nose. And dust mices. Remove carpet. I also notice that tiger my asthma is flowers like lily and tulips and people who smoked. The smells is on them and their breathe. That very hard when I have to work with these things. prednizone is well known to cause swelling etc much more than the other medications you both listed. It really isn't usually used long term because of a number of side effects. I guess though that the doctor who put you on it is weighing out the pros and cons and in a severe case maybe that is a warranted trade off, bugenerally you don't want to be on prednizone long term. As far as advair goes...if you are not taking it then its like not even treating the asthma, albuterol etc and the other things are meant to be coupled with the advair. Ask about alternatives to advair maybe...have you tried that? I have heard there is an alternative medication to the advair. ThanksMartha wrote: Am certainly no doctor, but from your description, it sounds as

if your dosage might be too high. My asthma was nicely controlled from age 8 to age 21 with 5mg of cortisone/prednisone a day. Cortisone/prednisone (corticosteroid) is an anti-inflammatory, which helps the bronchial tubes to go from inflamed to a more normal status. Cortisone/prednisone side effects typically present as "moon face," (facial swelling), general weight gain (it enhances appetite), a very hard abdomen (not the good "workout" kind lol). It can also increase chance of glaucoma. I've known several other asthmatics who've been on corticosteroids, but have never heard of any having the painful problems you describe. Usually it's just general weight gain. Am also puzzled that Advair would cause swelling. There have been reports of sudden death with Advair, but haven't heard about swelling. Were you prescribed both Singulair AND Advair to take at the same time? (I'm not saying it's wrong, it's just the first

the potassium and water deficiency theory in asthma sounds interesting. Can we talk about that a bit more? I haven't heard that theory Martha wrote: Thank you for educating me. In my experience I'd been offered, or taken, one or the other, but not both at the same time. It's easy to slip into muscle cramps. And when you think about it, the constriction of the smooth muscles can contribute to our bronchial tubes closing up on us. One doc I had (a

We used these little Rubbermaid straw bottles from Walmart.

http://www.rubbermaid.com/rubbermaid/product/category.jhtml?cat=HPCat100041

You can put their favorite drink in it, put the straw to their lips

and squeeze the bottle slightly to squirt into their mouth. After a

while they catch on & start sucking, then you can switch to other

strawed items. I found this far easier than going straight to a cup.

For no immunizations, you have to file a waiver that your state

allows. Check here for your state's listing:

Will she let you buy her clothes that work better for her? Will she talk with

you at a non-stressful time about why these outfits comfort her or what she/you

could do about peer teasing? About other ways of dealing with stress (guided

imagery relaxations, strategies for dealing with anxiety-producing situations

(you can call me to come get you if you are still anxious after x amount of

time; worked for us, but not for all).

Our 10 yo dd started wearing her winter coat in class in spring of 2009 due to

contamination issues. She was getting teased and had a heat rash as well. I

ended up buying her several hoodies that covered her but were less objectionable

and less likely to cause heat rash. Yes, it was an accommodation, but it made

her stand out less. Last summer, I could tell her stress level partly by what

she wore. The more covered up she was the stronger the contamination fears. She

is doing much better now on Zoloft, but still has some things to work on.

These are good suggestions, and I have tried some. Buying new clothes helps in

" that " moment, but then the next time she needs to dress for an occasion she

purposely refuses to wear what worked fine in the past (she looked good, felt

good about herself, both her dad and i approved) and instead opts for either an

outfit she knows will not work, or makes her miserable, etc.

We have tried to avoid meds, but I am thinking I might have little choice.

It's always nice to know I am not the only parent that suffers from clothing

issues! My dd also will wear the same outfit every day. She hates clothes

because they never feel right. She will be going in to second grade and luckily

she hasn't had too many peers make fun of her...yet. It's starting though and I

know it will only get worse... In the past she has always found an outfit that

works but then the season changes and we are back to square one. Bathing suit

bottoms over an A-line dress is sometimes all we can muster. Since her last

PANDAS episode in May, she refuses to even touch her clothes! She has recently

started wearing a bathing suit on occasion but she has essentially been naked

for almost two months... At this point I would let her wear almost anything if

she was willing to put it on. I really worry how she will deal with her

clothing issues as she gets older though. I think I may be in a similar place

in a couple of years.. Hang in there!! - Becky

her to wear appropriate clothing, or get forceful and insist she wears

appropriate clothing, it never ends well. She insists I am putting her down,

stifling her style, etc. I kind of hold back because if we have too much of a

" row " over it, she regresses and goes back to wearing only one set of clothes

for months on end (which is another round of vicious teasing from peers, not to

mention causes her alot of stress when the clothes wear out, have to be washed,

etc). I feel stuck, and frustrated. How can I talk to her and encourage her

without her taking it so personal and causing a set back?
