Guest guest
Do you think the weight gain and puffiness is just from water retention? My docs won't change my Asmanex to another kind because they take one look at me and say I don't have water retention. I could kick them in the ass. Excuse the language. I'm just so upset with docs that THINK they know it all! Guest guest
Honestly I don't know. I didn't think I was retaining water. considering that that is the most fav room in the house for me it seems like. But then I wasn't sure if the heat and humidty was causing me some problems, as I do tend to swell when it get warmer. But it was quite painful.. And I am not swelling now. Guest guest
Oh that is such a good point! I had that happen to me in the 1970s when I was going a bad spell of attacks, my 5 mg/day maintenance dosage of prednisone wasn't doing anything, so I was upped (temporarily) to 40mg/day. But that was before the docs understood that you have to be gradually taken off of prednisone. When I had no more pills to take, I had a real come-down. I too had depression, but mostly I was weak as a kitten. A doctor later told me that it had to do with the affect prednisone has on the fluids in your body (but I don't know for sure). That's why prednisone is so often administered in those packs that gradually decrease the number of pills. > Hi, am new to this website. I have been reading all the e-mails. Guest guest
I tried a sample of Advair and thought it was really effective. But when I asked my doctor for it, he said he no longer prescribes Advair because there have been sudden deaths from it. But I Googled that subject and it seemed the deaths were very few--like 3 in 1,000--plus I don't have a heart problem or high blood pressure or anything. Go figure. I consider changing doctors but it is very difficult to find good ones in rural areas. And this doctor's " my way or the highway " attitude is a recent change. I hate to sound paranoid or something but I think he's being influenced in some way by the pharmaceuticals. Everything in his waiting room (from Kleenex to the clock) have a pharmaceutical brand on them. He's open just 4 1/2 days a week yet he's got a brand new Mercedes SUV in his parking space, now (and his waiting room is always empty). I liked him because he does spend a lot of time with patients. > Advair is convenient because it combines two inhalers in one, but a > steroid inhaler and a long acting bronchodilator have the same result > for less money. > Re: help > > > I really don't know how people with asthma can afford advair, because > there is no way i can afford it, Here advair cost $160.00 > > Martha wrote: Thank you for educating me. Guest guest
Yeah, that's what my " old " Albuterol was costing. The problem is that the Congress passed a law some years back to eliminate CFCs from the environment (like in air conditioning freon) and asthma inhalers were included in the law, which as I understand it, takes effect in 2008. That means the large pharmaceuticals can " reformulate " Albuterol with a new patent for the environmentally friendly propellent. I've checked with three pharmacies in my area and they all tell me that the newly formulated Albuterol is already being shipped out to replace the " old " formula...and will cost around $100 instead of the $20+ we've been paying. > Wow I may have lousy drs here in lousiana but my albuterol only runs > me less than 25.00. > My asmanex runs about 125.00 and my flonaise is running about 86.00 >  > barb > > [sPAM] Re: help > > My abuterol inhaler is just $44.00 > > Bourg wrote: > > I am on provental Inhalers and they are good you are to see if you can > get that > > > Martha wrote: > > Yeppers. Guest guest
That brings up a question about Advair: It says right in the packaging that you must throw any remaining medication away that hasn't been used in 30 days--I double checked on line and it says the same thing--that the medicine in Advair somehow loses effectiveness after 30 days. It made me laugh because I pictured that Mission Impossible tape that disintegrates after it's been played. So how can you cut the Advair in half?? > Oh yes, from the knees down.. and couldn;t figure out why till I saw > the posts about asmanex.so I went back to advair, even tho I had > allergic reaction to it first time around.. > I became so fed up with the drs.. Guest guest
Thank you for that information. I'm currently using the Armstrong brand of Albuterol, and that is a CFC inhaler, which costs $22 (with my AARP discount). That is what is being discontinued and the new HFC Albuterol will be priced at around $100 because it will fall under a new drug patent. I will never be convinced that we asthmatics are depleting the ozone with our split-second spray of a CFC Albuterol (which goes into our lungs, not the air)--and especially when you consider the diesel fumes from the thousands of trucks that are on the roads (which GIVE me asthma). This is a big, industrial/pharmaceutical thing that has been done. We should be writing Congress, which made this law. Guest guest
You know, when I was fist diagnosed with asthmatic bronchitis, my dr. gave some water pills. He said my legs and ankles were swelled. Well, I lost all of the bloating, an was constantly in the powder room, but I became very sick, and my heart started acting up. It was from the potassium loss from the water pills. I mean, I was in the powder room every 5 minutes for about 2 days, I couldn't take anymore. I threw the pills in the trash, and haven't taken any since. Has anyone had this problem?Barbs Cajun Home wrote: Honestly I don't know. I didn't think I was retaining water. considering that that is the most fav room in the house for me it seems like. But then I wasn't sure if the heat and humidty was causing me some problems, as I do tend to swell when it get warmer. But it was quite painful.. And I am not swelling now. Guest guest
maybe we should start a petition against SSA so it won't be hard to get on.Martha wrote: Thank you for that information. Guest guest
See, I've checked around and only the Armstrong brand is available in my area. I started out on Proventil in 1986--but it just doesn't seem to be available where I live (in north Florida). And my doctor has become very testy about writing prescriptions that I request. I'd change, but that would involve a 100-mile drive into the nearest large city. Plus, any new doctor is going to want to wring my wallet out with a bunch of tests. I'm still paying off a $691 ambulance trip that I took to the ER last May. It's awful not having health insurance. Guest guest
oooooooooooooh I'd trade your ambulance bill for mine from March.. which I am paying on, 1149.00 for a two mile ride.. I agree it is horrible not having health insurance. Hubby's job does not provide any, and we can't afford it on our own. I visited CLinton's myspace site to ask about having a national insurance like Australia, UK and other countries provide for their citizens. Never did hear anything back. Guest guest
Man oh man... i feel what you are going through. Just the other day I called my doctor to get a refill on my albuterol... they said that i have to come in to the office because i am using too much of my medication and they need to evaluate me... Funny, that is what they said about six months ago and did not give me any change in my medication or habits... I currently use and have used for 15 years, albuterol, singular, and a nebulizer and for about two years advair.. they have never changed anything. I just feel like they don't care about me and just care that my dollar keeps coming in... Any suggestions... catherineMartha wrote: See, I've checked around and only the Armstrong brand is available in my area. Guest guest
Whoa...this is spooky. My doctor just told me exactly the same thing--that I'm using " too much " of my Albuterol--so I " must " go on Flovent. When I told him that this arrangement left me not only near-broke, but also without an emergency inhaler, he grudgingly wrote a prescription for the new HFC Albuterol. I've been using Albuterol (about 3 times/24 hrs, mostly at night)--and the packaging says it can safely be used up to 8 times/24 hrs. My former dr., a pulmonary specialist, told me I could use it preventatively, too--before exercising, for example. Both my current dr. and the CVS pharmacist tell me that Albuterol is not to be used preventively, yet Albuterol websites and the packaging both say it can. The CVS pharmacist even insulted my previous dr: " We've come a long way in treatment of asthma, so your doctor probably wasn't up on the latest information. " But that doctor had a son with asthma and did keep up with all the latest info. I responded to the pharmacist, " Well if asthma is being so well treated, nowadays, how come the mortality rate is going up, not down? " Of course, these folks don't like it when we get feisty. So much for all the rhetoric about " discussing " your health with your doctors and pharmacists. Something just doesn't smell right, here. Dare I say it sounds like " talking points " that doctors are getting from big Pharma? Guest guest
Yes you can use albeterol on occassion for preventive measures, I am told I need to do it in freezing cold weather, people I fly -- i've had mild attacks on airplanes, and before exercise if needed. If you are using albuterol everday in reaction then you probably need something else. I use Advair everyday and then use albuterol if I feel an attack coming on or for above situations. I also measure my peak flows. I am suprised your doctor has not asked you to record your peakflows on a daily basis. And you must always have an emergency inhaler. That sounds like a malpractice suit waiting to happen if he would not prescribe you an emergency inhaler. Have you looked into prescription assitance. There is a one that has been advertised on TV by Mortel . That may help keep the cost down. I am worried about the fact that people are not going to afford the new abuterol and deaths are going to rise because people will choose to do without. Do you have an asthma action plan? Guest guest
That is the first time I had heard of an asthma action plan. Can you explain a plan to me? Webber wrote: Yes you can use albeterol on occassion for preventive measures, I am told I need to do it in freezing cold weather, people I fly -- i've had mild attacks on airplanes, and before exercise if needed. Martha <del-maratlantic (DOT) net> wrote: Whoa...this is spooky. My doctor just told me exactly the same thing--that I'm using "too much" of my Albuterol--so I "must" go on Flovent. The CVS pharmacist even insulted my previous dr: "We've come a long way in treatment of asthma, so your doctor probably wasn't up on the latest information." But that doctor had a son with asthma and did keep up with all the latest info. I responded to the pharmacist, "Well if asthma is being so well treated, nowadays, how come the mortality rate is going up, not down?" Of course, these folks don't like it when we get feisty. So much for all the rhetoric about "discussing" your health with your doctors and pharmacists.Something just doesn't smell right, here. Dare I say it sounds like "talking points" that doctors are getting from big Pharma? On Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at 10:57 AM, catherine pasky wrote:>>>>> Man oh man... i feel what you are going through. Guest guest
An astham action plan is a plan on how to manage your astham and what to do in the event of an astham attack. There are many different of action plan worksheets out there. Find one and use it. It helps you know what your medications are, what they are for, and when to use them. Some action plans have areas for you to chart your peak flows every day. Daily peak flow reading are recommended for good astham control. Here are some links to action plans.... http://www.lungusa.org/atf/cf/%7B7A8D42C2-FCCA-4604-8ADE-7F5D5E762256%7D/AAP.PDF http://www.aaaai.org/members/allied_health/tool_kit/handouts/my_action_plan.pdf http://www.noattacks.org/AsthmaActionCardStudent.pdf > > > > >> > > > > > I was born with asthma and allergies.
