Guest guest
Hi I was just in the hospital for a day cause of my asthma attack. Only thing they used in the hospital is the nebulizador machine with ipratropium bromide and albuterol sulfate solution. To get the medication down to my lung what inhaler can not. I felt that I could do this all at home so now I am buying the machine so I don't have to be in the hospital. There is not much can do when people sick. I gotten the flue shot. But the main thing I have to do for myself is to stay away the things that will tiger it. Like water slides, water gets into my nose. And dust mices. Remove carpet. I also notice that tiger my asthma is flowers like lily and tulips and people who smoked. The smells is on them and their breathe. That very hard when I have to work with these things. Like some say there goes their job after so many years.foxfire290 wrote: I was born with asthma and allergies. Over the years it has gotten progressively worse. Any way they have put me on predinsone again (i hate that med) it makes me swell 2 sizes or larger than what I already am. Not being a thin chiclet it really shows. I swell so bad my feet hurt and my kidneys my back. Lets face it my everything hurts, then it takes months to get back to normal. Is there anything else out there that yall know of that can be used instead of prednisone? Advair I have it I dont take it, it to swells me up. Guest guest
Am certainly no doctor, but from your description, it sounds as if your dosage might be too high. My asthma was nicely controlled from age 8 to age 21 with 5mg of cortisone/prednisone a day. Cortisone/prednisone (corticosteroid) is an anti-inflammatory, which helps the bronchial tubes to go from inflamed to a more normal status. Cortisone/prednisone side effects typically present as " moon face, " (facial swelling), general weight gain (it enhances appetite), a very hard abdomen (not the good " workout " kind lol). It can also increase chance of glaucoma. I've known several other asthmatics who've been on corticosteroids, but have never heard of any having the painful problems you describe. Usually it's just general weight gain. Am also puzzled that Advair would cause swelling. There have been reports of sudden death with Advair, but haven't heard about swelling. Were you prescribed both Singulair AND Advair to take at the same time? (I'm not saying it's wrong, it's just the first I've heard of it...) martha > I was born with asthma and allergies. Guest guest
I'm on Singulair, Advair, Prednisone 10mg, Xopenex and Xolair. I've gained 5 - 10 lbs since the Prednisone but I had lost about 15 lbs before being diagnosed about 8 months ago from being so sick for months prior to that. As far as pain as a side effect of any of the drugs I have not really had any to speak of. I have had a few charlie horse tyle cramps in my legs and feet new and then at night when I'm sleeping which from what I read can be a side effect of the Advair. Anyway just thought I'd chime in that in some cases at least Advair and Singulair are used together. Also my son has had Asthma for over 20 years and he is on the Advair and Singulair combination and does very well on it.Martha wrote: Am certainly no doctor, but from your description, it sounds as if your dosage might be too high. Guest guest
Yesturday I was in the hospital they gave me two breathing treatments and two shots to open my lungs. They really didnt want to release me. They gave me a script for prednisone 40mg a day for 5 days I have albuterol inhaler and advair. I am just trying to make it till july when my appt to a pulmonolgist is. It so hard to believe that ppl have to wait months for an appt. Kind of like well if you are still breathing we can see you then. I seem to hyper sensitive to alot of things from cleaning items to foods to plants to fragrances. Sometimes it feels like society is trying to do me in lol. I know that isnt funny but ya know if I wasnt laughing I be crying. Prednisone gave me cushings disease as if everything else wasnt enough. Every day is like a battle to me but it is one i am going to win. So i modify if i have to to do what i need to do to get what i need done. I was on so many meds i basically put them in the closet and shut the door. I try and take only what I really need. > I was born with asthma and allergies. Guest guest
Thank you for educating me. In my experience I'd been offered, or taken, one or the other, but not both at the same time. It's really important that we all communicate with each other so that we can understand all the convolutions of this lousy ailment--that's the beauty of belonging to this board...together we're more than any of us would be as individuals. Over the 50+ years I've had asthma, I've found that it's important to keep potassium levels up to par. It's easy to slip into muscle cramps. And when you think about it, the constriction of the smooth muscles can contribute to our bronchial tubes closing up on us. One doc I had (a pulmonary guy in Washington DC) told me to keep myself well hydrated and he recommended Gatorade, which I happen to detest, but drink it anyway. > I'm on Singulair, Advair, Prednisone 10mg, Xopenex and Xolair. I've > gained 5 - 10 lbs since the Prednisone but I had lost about 15 lbs > before being diagnosed about 8 months ago from being so sick for > months prior to that. As far as pain as a side effect of any of the > drugs I have not really had any to speak of. I have had a few charlie > horse tyle cramps in my legs and feet new and then at night when I'm > sleeping which from what I read can be a side effect of the Advair. > Anyway just thought I'd chime in that in some cases at least Advair > and Singulair are used together. Also my son has had Asthma for over > 20 years and he is on the Advair and Singulair combination and does > very well on it. > > Martha wrote: > > Am certainly no doctor, but from your description, it sounds as if your > dosage might be too high. Guest guest
Yeppers. You and I are in the same boat. My doctor just prescribed Flovent, which will cost me $124 (I presume per month) and the newly patented, " environmentally friendly " Albuterol " rescue " inhaler will be at least $99 instead of the $22 that the " old, " generic, Albuterol was costing me. I live on about $15,000/yr and don't know how I'm going to spend more than 10% of my income on these two prescriptions. And I've got six years to go before I get to Medicare...and make " too much " to qualify for Medicaid. (And then all these news stories ask why we're not saving anything!) Anybody have some tips where to get our drugs more inexpensively? > I really don't know how people with asthma can afford advair, because > there is no way i can afford it, Here advair cost $160.00 > > Martha wrote: > > Thank you for educating me. Guest guest
Hi, am new to this website. I have been reading all the e-mails. They are very interesting. The last time I was in the hospital with an asthma attack. They gave me that nebulizer stuff. Then they gave me prednisone. Well , I got better, but in the meantime I acted oddly. And they only gave me so much. They really did not wean me off of it like they should have. I took it for about a week, and then nothing. Boy, I thought I was losing my mind, I was crying, I thought about killing myself, I was so depressed. I felt odd. I felt like I was losing it. It really scared me. I called my counselor, and she talked to me for a long time. Then I called a nurse. I was like that for about 2 or 3 days, boy was I glad when it wore off. No one really did anything, but it sort of worked itself out of my system. The next time I will be forwarned.foxfire290 wrote: Yesturday I was in the hospital they gave me two breathing treatments and two shots to open my lungs. Guest guest
They haven't stopped selling the regualr Albuterol inhalers so demand a new prescription for you old one. Flovent is a nice steroid because it's supposed to have slightly less side effects but I believe the other less expensive ones work just as well. Speak to your doctor about the alternatives. Re: help Yeppers. <excerpt>I really don't know how people with asthma can afford advair, because there is no way i can afford it, Here advair cost $160.00 wrote: Thank you for educating me. Guest guest
Advair is convenient because it combines two inhalers in one, but a steroid inhaler and a long acting bronchodilator have the same result for less money. Guest guest
I have been a few family gatherings, where some of my relatives have sat and smoked right next to me, and they didn't care that I have asthma. I always have to leave a lot of places because of people like this. I have taken to wearing masks. Boy, do people stare at you then, but I don't care it helps. I have been wanting to get a pet. But, I absolutely cannot go near labradors, their dander puts me in the hospital. I am afraid to have anything except this big, fat, goldfish I live with. LOL. Guest guest
$160 is not as high as what my pharmacy charges ........here in Maine it's $238 for the 500/50. But that is nothing compared to the $1500 a month for the Xolair. I am very fortunate I have reasonably decent health insurance as these cost would be unmanagle, especially the Xolair. I have not been on it long enough to see what kind of results I will get from it to see if it will be worth it or not. I can't imagine dealing with trying to pay for things out of pocket. Guest guest
I'm lucky that my primary care physician has asthma and insists on seeing me if I'm not feeling well. He understands how things can go downhill rapidly. Re: Re: help Hi, am new to this website. I have been reading all the e-mails. They are very interesting. Guest guest
Oh yes, from the knees down.. and couldn;t figure out why till I saw the posts about asmanex.so I went back to advair, even tho I had allergic reaction to it first time around.. I became so fed up with the drs.. I decided to do an experiment of my own, and I am keeping a journal.. Cut the advair in half, and omitting all dairy from my diet.. And have been doing this a week now and I feel so much better. Its like night and day. I will take the journal with me when I go for my next appointment and show her what I have found out on my own. Guest guest
I used to use asmanex, but I don't remember about the swelling. I have noticed that the last week or so I have been swelling a lot in my ankles. I use xopenex, the clearer form of albuterol. And he gave me the generic form of flonase., but he told me to use it only if I have to. The albuterol I use a lot. I also have the nebulizer with liquid xopenex. Usually that is about all I use. I am reading that a lot of people are using a lot of stuff all together. My Dr. tells me that you shouldn't be taking all those things together. He is very, very, careful what he gives me. I used to use fosamax, but it started making me very sick. I have a summer cold right now, and I have been really miserable, I will have to go in and see my Dr.. But with the air conditioning I am miserable all summer. But without it I am also sick, what do you do?char from Spokane wa wrote: Does your asmanex make you retain water and get puffy all over like it does me.
