Hi Debi:

The state of Arizona is much more than desert, with beautiful mountains,

ski resorts, and plush forests. However the entire state would be considered a

" high desert " climate, which can mean temperatures in the 90's during the day,

but in the 30's and 40's in the higher elevations during the nighttime hours.

(Of course there is the western border with California which boasts a low

elevation and soaring high temperatures, but it's a DRY heat lol.) There isn't

a lot of humidity in Arizona, which is why forest fires in the western states

burn more intensely. An average humidity would be in the teens, which is why it

cools down so much at night (and nighttime cloud cover is rare). When you hike

in the high deserts of Arizona you do sweat, but it evaporates quickly from the

skin, cooling you off (unlike the soaking clothes you get when you walk in the

south).

Tucson gets hotter temperatures in the summer because it sits in a " bowl " but

the residents frequently take weekend drives to the White Mountains nearby and

enjoy the higher elevation coolness, similar to summertime in Telluride or

Aspen. And Flagstaff, Arizona? A marvelous place with nice snow... and elk

that wander down the mountains and into the city. Inside the city limits are

caution signs saying " Watch for falling rock " and " Watch for elk " : )

Louisiana or the desert of Arizona makes me about pass out! When it

gets humid here, and most of the summer the humidity is in the high

80%s, I don't wanna be anywhere but the pool.

We just had a nice couple of wks here in the 70's, this weekend has

been back in the 30's-50's.

It's the humidity that's the killer. You sweat but it just sits

there on your skin and doesn't evaporatively cool your body. Just

drips off while you swelter and feel uncomfortable in soaking wet

clothes...YUCK!! My husband's family is from Oklahoma, and I made

the grave error of visiting there with him one summer before was

born. I informed him the next time I go there will be to deliver his

ashes to his family....or better yet, I'll just FedEx them! LOL

Give me perfect So Cal coastal mountains weather any time. Ocean

breezes coming through the canyons bringing just enough humidity...

desert, mountains, ocean all within range.... amazing services for

my daughter.... and yes, insane housing costs, but we're 45 miles out

of the city craziness and it's still pretty affordable out here, not

to mention less traffic, more peace and quiet and down-to-earth people.

Well, you can be sure Mr. Naked did some nude sunbathing up there on

the trail, so I suppose that counts for something!

A close friend of mine recently moved to Texas from CA because her

husband got transferred at work. They lived in a small condo here

with two little kids, and they sold it and bought in a new

development, gated, huge, etc. She calls me almost every day crying,

wishing she had her condo back. Yeah, the house is big and nice, but

it's not CA. I've lived in MA, CO, NY.... nothing compared to CA

for me. As far as rent goes, it varies so much depending on so many

factors. Like anything else, you get what you pay for. Ave. $650 -

$2450/mo.

I now live in Colorado and yes it is beautiful but I grew up in Arizona and I

miss it.

Besides a ton of other factors, Arizona is also much better for services for our

kiddos.

All of our speech, ot, music therapy etc. was paid for and we had a habilitation

therapist and respite

provider. They also have SARRC (Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center)

which is great.

Colorado is very behind the times in many ways. They have zero for services here

oh unless you are

considered, " retarded " yes they still use that word! Then if you qualify you go

on a waiting list and in 2 to 5 years

you might get an annual stipened of $125 to help with therapy. I would go back

to AZ in a heartbeat to be able to

get my kids all of that help. Just my two cents worth!

Having lived in CA, then IL, & now AZ, I must say I like it here the best.

Since I like the sun, AZ is great for that. When I lived in IL, there were

no services & no active parents groups in Urbana & no resources. (CA was

pre autism).

In AZ, I have found many active & involved parents who are very

knowledgeable & working hard to actively recover their kids in many

different ways.

SARRC is a looking professional agency with lots (relatively speaking, b/c

when is it evver enough $) of corporate connections b/c it is run by a mom

who owns her own PR company. Their research focus is mostly genetics

related with T-Gen, a major genetics research company. The biggest thing is

that they actively DISCOURAGE parents about biomedical, & I have heard that

said repeatedly from other parents. I don't think any group that is a

referral/resource agency should say what is good or not for parents; they

should offer the info & let the parents decide & not hide/withhold info to

the parents. I may not agree with dolphin therapy as a major treatment

modality, for example, but I wouldn't actively NOT give out the info if it

came up. (Of what little I know)

There is a lot to offer here in AZ, I think, & lots more to do to make it

better for our kids.
