Guest guest
Dear , It sounds like you are making amazing progress! I'm very proud of you and the choices you have made, and the direction you are now heading. Please stay in touch, and let us know how things are. I'll also try to be better about responding quicker to group emails. I think about each of my affirmation members every single day, and say a prayer for each of you everyday, but can't seem to get to the computer and write very regularly. Things are particularly hectic in our family right now with so much going on, but I'm trying to hang in there -- just like everyone else. Guest guest
I have OCD myself--and read Brain Lock. I really liked the book--thought it did a fabulous job of explaining OCD. It also helped validate the fact that OCD is a legitimate thing, and not something I made up (because it goes into basic detail about how it works in the brain, etc.). What type of OCD does your daughter have? I think it's most helpful in treating compulsions. Most of my OCD is thought-based (intrusive thoughts, worries, etc.) but the ideas presented in Brain Lock are fabulous for treating compulsions. I highly recommend it! Good luck to you and your daughter!
Guest guest
Dear - Welcome to the group. When my daughter was diagnosed I got the books by Tamar Chansky I think they are " freeing your Child from Anxiety " and " Freeing Your Child from OCD " . They were great because I could read select parts to my child (she was only 11 at teh time) and she understood them. It helped a lot.  M Subject: Hello Everyone! To: Date: Wednesday, April 21, 2010, 5:06 PM  I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is and I have a 9 year old daughter that has just been diagnosed with OCD yesterday. I am looking forward to talking with others that are going through the same things with their children. This is rather new to me, but I have been doing a lot of reading on the internet about OCD in children. The social worker that my daughter is seeing now specializes in working with children with OCD she suggested reading a book that would explain more about OCD and the therapy she would be using it's called Brain lock by Jeffery M. Schwartz M.D. has anyone read this book? what is your opinion about it?
Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the group. That's great that you have found a social worker who will work with your daughter. Make sure she will be using ERP (exposure and response/ritual prevention) based CBT. What sort of obsessions and compulsions does your daughter have? How long has it been? The book Brain Lock is very good. It is probably one of the best books for describing how OCD works in the brain and how CBT works to change the patterns/reponse loop that is occuring. Other books that you might find helpful are - What to do when your brain gets stuck (children) Up and Down the Worry Hill, Aureen Pinto-Wagner (children) What to do When your child has OCD, Aureen Pinto-Wagner (parents) Freeing your Child from OCD, Tamar Chansky (parents) A complete book list can be found on the OCfoundation website - www.ocfoundation.org. You will find pretty much anything you might want to know about OCD there, including support groups and a list of treatment providers(not approved just listed). On this site there are " Files " with information on just about everything, medications, CBT, School accomodations, research papers. I actually find Wikipedia very up to date with treatments information and resources, and less overwhelming. There are many here who will understand the challenges of the day to day living with someone affected by OCD. Don't hesitate to throw any questions out there, or share your concerns, or to just vent on the bad days. Someone will have an idea or at least offer what they can. Guest guest
Her biggest one is germs she has to wash her hands a lot. Also, she avoids certain foods because she is afraid she will choke. The more I read about this the more I realize there is more than just one certain thing that is a concern for her. Thank you for sharing and giving me your opinion of the book I am very interested in reading it. > > I have OCD myself--and read Brain Lock. Guest guest
Hi , welcome!! I have a son, , whose OCD started in 6th grade. I joined this group when I found it and it was my best support! 's 21 yrs old now, presently away at college. We've had our ups/downs over the years with OCD for him. It's good to have a place like this to come share, just read, ask questions, and vent on bad days! > > I just wanted to introduce myself.
