Guest guest
[Dist7News] ear tags Do you think it makes a difference on the type of area the goats are housed as to whether the ear tags rip or not?My friend raises boers in 7 acres of grass pasture. Does not have ear tags ripping out of the goats. However, when I sold some Nubian goats the company wanted vet-placed tags in the ear (tattoos weren't good enough) to ID the animal for testing. In the month between the tests and the shipment, 3 goats had their ears ripped in half from the tags. I have 20 acres brush, grass, trees. Field fencing that they stick their heads through to eat on the other side of the fence. Also at the local fair, with the metal pens, every year there is at least one boer market wether who gets the tag ripped out of the ear somehow.I refuse to put tags in Nubian ears since the above incident. While I don't like the whole NAIS at all, when reading it, it appeared that they were considering tattoos with registration papers....like the scrapie thing. But then every goat must be papered from birth and ADGA fees paid??? How would they handle LaManchas when the tag has to have 15 characters on it?Does the USDA have a clue that goats and their ears are not like cattle or sheep? If not, shouldn't someone (perhaps from ADGA) be educating them on the subject?Tonya Gould If you are informed you heard it here on District 5 News where 452 goat owners share information and ideas
