Ask your doctor about the cytochrome P 450 system. This is responsible for the metabolism/ detoxification of drugs taken in by the body. Both SSRIs like Cipralex/Lexapro and melatonin use the cytochrome P 450 system, and this inhibits the enzymes, and can lead to serotonin syndrome, due to the body's inability to properly metabolize the Cipralex. SSRIs should never be taken with melatonin, particularly in children. You should also avoid giving Motrin, Advil, Xanax, Valium, Zantec, Grapefruit Juice, and most all over the counter nasal decongestants. These can all lead to serotonin syndrome when given with Cipralex/ Lexapro due to compromising the cytochrome P 450 system. Hope this helps, > , > > What about Cipralex? Allie has been on Luvox for years, and I couldn't count the times I've given her Motrin or Advil or nasal decongestants. I've even given her Advil for the headaches she sometimes gets the first day when we change her SSRI dosage. I have never given her a new med without screening it with all her doctors for drug interaction issues first. Now I'm worried I might be causing damage.
