Guest guest
I have never tried any of the diets. When I was going to she was much younger and only eating Cheerios, chicken nuggets and milk. It was recommended that I not try any of the diets. Is it true that if I try gluten free the entire family will have to go gluten free and that I have to purchase all new pans, plates, etc.? I will google, thank you. TJ >>> fightingautism@... 02/28/07 4:29 PM >>> Have you tried the gluten-free, casein-free diet to help with hyperactivity? Or eliminating artificial flavorings/preservatives? Feingold Diet can be very successful with hyperactivity, along with gfcf, or even just removing dairy. Also, vit b-6/magnesium has been studied out the wazzoo & found to calm kids with autism. Tardive dyskinesia is a side-effect from some pyschiatric meds. The package insert/pharmacy guide you were given has it listed if it's a possible effect from the med, along with other possible side-effects. The person makes odd-looking facial or body movements. Do a google on it, there are some videos somewhere that give examples of it. HTH, Debi > > That's horrible. What is tardive dskinesia? Thank goodness nothing > like tha has happened with Kayla. Guest guest
en has now been on (Risperidone) Riperdal .5 mg. twice a day on February 27, 2007 and 1 mg. twice a day since February 28, 2007. Today is the 12th Day of (Riperidone) Riperdal. I have seen a calming effect and she has reduced her self-injuring and aggressive behavior traumatically. She doing much better in school has increased her language at home and her obsessive compulsive behavior has reduced but we are using the behavior to force language. She is preoccupied with transparent tape and she seems to feel that what ever toy she is carrying needed to be taped with scotch tape. Some of this is our fault because in the past she loved to carry a ruler to us as a stemming stick tapping her mouth, if the ruler would break we would fix the ruler with scotch tape. So now she seems to feel that she needs to fix her toy she is carrying with scotch tape. It is great because in order for her to get use to get a piece of tape she has to repeat " I " , " want " , " tape " , " please " , " Mom " . Everyone in the family is working on Jen changing the words. The downside is that we have been wearing scotch tape, cleaning off tape from the floor, I had picked it off the collie dog and think he would have preferred it stay, because a little lose fur accompanied the tape. I have worn scotch tape to the grocery store so my friends might be wondering about me again. Oh well, Jen language is increasing and she is improving in her school work! Jen's teacher writes home regularly how fantastic she doing in school, granted she is far from normal, but she is making progress. Guest guest
Bev, This is Awesome! YOOOOHOO. I can relate to the obsession to the tape. At my house, it is definitely white copier paper. I cannot keep enough in my copier because , age 12 autism, is always taking it and stapling the pages to make books. She writes stories with illustrations so we do not discourage this practice either. Since Jen is 18 years old, have you tried other meds and not seen them work over the years? We will be considering meds this year and have been researching what will and won't work with autistic children. Guest guest
Bev, glad it's working. Aren't the gains wonderful? I know what you mean about the store, we have this joke where we'll tap the girls' butt cheeks and tell them we're playing the bongos. Well, the other day at Walmart my 4 yr old Dinah wanted to walk. She started following me around spanking me on the butt & giggling saying, " Mommy, I'm playing the bongos. " When she saw I was embarassed she kept it going for quite a while. Guest guest
I would love if Jen would move from the art of scotch tape sculptures to the craft of bookbinding. She has been adding photographs to the sculptures, different collector cards and her Dad's old hunting license. LOL At least everyone would not be wearing the sculptures. She has been using at least 12 large rolls of scotch tape a week or more, plus a few of those disposable dispensers to create her sculptures. Sooner or later I would think the grocery store will be wondering what is going on with the boom in sales of scotch tape. I wonder if the scotch tape sculpture would sell on E-bay. Just kidding! Guest guest
Dear Bev, I don't post alot here but enjoy reading everyones daily experiences with our wonderful daughters with autism. Had to write to you because I also have a Jen who is 18 with autism! How ironic is that?? My next hurdle is getting through senior pictures on Tuesday! Any words of advice out there?? The best pictures we have of her area candid shots as she takes terrible pictures of she asked to pose and smile. Thanks Jane Mother of another 18 year old Jen bridalsh wrote: I would love if Jen would move from the art of scotch tape sculptures to the craft of bookbinding. Guest guest
I was trying to keep Allie's art in a notebook, she kept tearing it out. But when she spent the evening helping us fill binders, she got all about it. She is now making a binder of writing & art. Really cool. Maybe if you have her sit & 3 hole punch a single sheet over & over she might get re-focused. Don't know, just thought I'd throw it out there. Guest guest
Hey Bev, My daughter makes toilet paper sculptures. Sometimes we are banging on the door with an almost exploding bladder and we know there will be artwork when we finally do get our turn in there. She just goes into a zone and makes all this weird toilet paper stuff. Sometimes there are these paper chains strung across the bathroom or little people. She doesn't like the soft two ply, it doesn't twist well. Geez, can you believe the things we learn to live with.
