Guest guest
My daughter has been on it for about 5 months. She seemed to calm down some but became much more interactive with her classmates and teachers. She was also able to have indepth conversations. Kayla is verbal and has been since she was 4.5 yrs, but not able to have a nice conversation. The down side is she is gaining weight rapidly. I my have to take her off of it as she is on what her dr considers a high dose 4mgs a day. Guest guest
Unfortunately, this is the same thing that happened with at an early age. We got the Risperdol compounded in a gel form. She gained weight rapidly. Shanna Taiji Marino wrote: My daughter has been on it for about 5 months. She seemed to calm down some but became much more interactive with her classmates and teachers. Guest guest
At the time, she was on Clonidine (compounded) & Risperdal. I did think that they worked originially. I did not like what I saw in the weight gain. She was probably on these 2 drugs for over a year. Maybe even 2. I would have to look back in her med records to tell you. We did do " secretin " infusions and the compounded gel form when she was younger. I did see a lot of change in the infusions but it was a very traumatic experience for my husband and I and the medical staff in holding her down. I do not believe that there were side effects that were negative from this therapy. We also did mega vitamin therapy when she was age 3 -5. She figured out that it was in her drinks and I could not get her to drink this or take any chewable vitamins. At one point, we had Vitamin A (I think) compounded in a gel form and tried that for a year. I did not see any visable change from doing this. This past year with the change in swallowing over the counter meds, I have seen dramatic changes in her. She is much more verbal. She is answering & asking very difficult questions that before she was not interested in. We have been doing (since Christmas) the following: WE did zeolite for about 3 weeks at Christmas. We had a substantial piece of heavy metal that she passed as a result of this. It is a detoxing agent. We have been very limited doing this only on the weekends due to lots of " stimming " & hyperactivity. I did like what I saw from this therapy though. We also started Super B complex, womens' multivitamin, Fish oil capsules, colon green (helping with constipation), herbs & prunes, kelp with iodine (another detox), malic acid, calcium magnesium zinc, advanced enzyme system (every meal) & stool softner with stimulator sennosides. She currently has occasional problems with self-in jurious behavior biting her fore-finger when frustrated/excited (happy too). I have put off getting her on psychotic drugs due to one of my other children having too many and not seeing the results that I want to see. I want to try as many natural things with that I can. If there is someone on this list that has a comment on the regimen of herbs/vitamins I am giving her, please comment. If someone has a solution for the biting self, then please address. I personally have a friend here with a daughter, age 11, who has at least 10 diagnosis. She is on so many pills for aggression/behavior problems. I have not see that the meds they are giving her is helping. She is in a typical classroom but I do not see that lasting unless she changes. She is very aggressive. Guest guest
I have not tried any natural remedies. I don't know enough about them and don't have a dr that does either. So we treat with a CODY center dr (Long Island NY). This center specializes in autism. I would love not to have her on any meds but she needs something. Kayla was also on Clonidine but that was when she was 5 for probably 4 years but she maxed out on the dosage. Then we tried so many others it isn't possible for me to remember them all. The last one before resperdal was Ablify. This helped but not enough. I wish I had more knowledge in the herbal remedy areas but don't. As for self injury, I only have a few instances in which she does this. Kayla seems to injure herself when she is frustrated with herself. She will strike her head with her hands. We stop her and tell her that she is wonderful, smart and lovable, that hitting herself is not good. Guest guest
T- One of my other daughters tried Abilify. We had terrible side affects to that drug. She is currently on lithium/lamictal/effexor for her bi=polar. Unfortunately, I do not like the regimen of drugs she is on. I am not convinced that the Effexor is working. We saw some good stuff in the beginning but now she is leveling out. The lithium/lamictal has to be monitored with blood work. She stays a lot less aggressive with these meds. That is all I know that may help. I am sorry for not much help. Good luck and keep us posted on your daughters' progress. Shanna Taiji Marino wrote: I have not tried any natural remedies.
Guest guest
4mgs is an adult schizophrenia dose, it's, like, really really really high. I took 0.25mg a couple years ago and got a tardive dyskinesia after a year. The tongue rolling and eye twitching still haven't gone away. And this was on a LOW dose. Anything higher and I hallucinated. Like, my pillbox was the coolest thing ever. And a log was a mountain lion. Didn't put on weight, but I never put on weight. Guest guest
Shanna, I would suggest anyone with autism & aggressive behaviors be tested for testosterone levels. I can't remember the specific test though that Dr. Geier has said, it's not the " normal " test. ...anyone know of which test? Also, I personally would think 10 meds would be *making* her agressive, but I'm far from an expert. I just can't see how 10 meds at once all for the same/similar thing can be doing any good. Guest guest
Have you tried the gluten-free, casein-free diet to help with hyperactivity? Or eliminating artificial flavorings/preservatives? Feingold Diet can be very successful with hyperactivity, along with gfcf, or even just removing dairy. Also, vit b-6/magnesium has been studied out the wazzoo & found to calm kids with autism. Tardive dyskinesia is a side-effect from some pyschiatric meds. The package insert/pharmacy guide you were given has it listed if it's a possible effect from the med, along with other possible side-effects. The person makes odd-looking facial or body movements. Do a google on it, there are some videos somewhere that give examples of it. HTH, Debi > > That's horrible. What is tardive dskinesia? Thank goodness nothing > like tha has happened with Kayla.
Guest guest
I second the diet suggestion, Im Feingold/gluten free. (med justification below) Tardive dyskinesia is tics that appear after being on antipsychotics for a while. Sometimes tics thatll go away happen when you start an antipsychotic (there was one that made my WHOLE BODY twitch so bad my friend couldnt tell if it was a seizure or a side effect) but TD can be permanant. I got lucky with just the tongue and eyebrow twitchies. Some people get mouth movements or big blinking or painful neck twisting. Now I'm just on seizure meds, Ritalin sometimes, and prozac for migraines so bad they thought they were mini-strokes (and I am 24 with very low blood pressure), as far as head meds go. This is down from Risperdal, seizure meds, Strattera, and whatever flavor of the month other medication was for whatever moodiness was going on. Strattera was good but it pooped out on me. Too much Other Stuff made me so spacy, anyway...my attention is mostly fine without ADHD meds OFF the other stuff. But seizures win, so I get the smallest available dose of ritalin. I tried a couple supplements but they didn't play nice with my epilepsy. Kassiane --- Debi wrote: > Have you tried the gluten-free, casein-free diet to > help with > hyperactivity? Guest guest
I have never tried any of the diets. When I was going to she was much younger and only eating Cheerios, chicken nuggets and milk. It was recommended that I not try any of the diets. Is it true that if I try gluten free the entire family will have to go gluten free and that I have to purchase all new pans, plates, etc.? I will google, thank you. TJ >>> fightingautism@... 02/28/07 4:29 PM >>> Have you tried the gluten-free, casein-free diet to help with hyperactivity?
