I would spend a lot of time examing the diets of the moms and see where they are lacking proper nutrition.

I would incorporate lots of dark greens, raw veggis and fruits, and for cooked foods I'd use Sally Fallon's work "Nourishing Traditions".

Dear Starlene,

Thanks for your words. So, do you think

that babies don’t NEED to poop daily?

a, are you sure

it is really constipation? Because breastmilk is so perfectly

utilized in the body, sometimes breastfed babies won't go poop for days on end

and finally have one big poop. When I nursed mine, it was something we

laughed about at La Leche League meetings, how we got to know which day to stay

home or else we'd have exploded diapers while out.

You probably know this, I just thought I'd ask to eliminate it.

A question

I am working with a number of parents whose breast fed babies are

struggling

with constipation. What recommendations do you all make for such situations?

Starlene,Regarding baby constipation, that's one of the better puns I've seen of late. " Eliminate it " . Good job. So to speak. I'd better stop typing. ;)Sharon, NH

Something that I

figured out with nursing my last baby, was that she wasn't getting enough of

the " hind milk. " She was only getting the " fore

milk " because she was a snacker for nursing (would nurse for a

minute or two and then stop) and I always switched sides each time I

nursed. Then I read something about the lack of BM's in breast fed babies

is sometimes because of not getting the hind milk. So, I

started nursing on each side twice before switching. It worked...we

had poopy diapers galore. Sorry for the graphic details. :-)

This is probably

something you've already addressed, but just in case...

a,

Be aware of the constipating effects of vaccinations. Vaccinations

themselves are another whole issue I'm sure, but one of their side

effects can be constipation.

  • 1 year later...

We started with 2/day..and three eventually, which was much better.

Give it with each dose of Valtrex, and GABA along with that as taking

meds and beign sick creates alot of stress for out kids. Lthianine is

also a good bet for the stress. GIve that one if you choose as well.

I've read a ton on L-theanine. It helps produce alpha waves and calms

the brain down, but it also tends to reduce serotonin. It lasts 8-10

hours which is nice, but then they crash and jump all over the house,

and since they are low in serotonin, they are low in melatonin, and

can't sleep. I took it with my 2 kids one day and we all had a hard

time sleeping. It simply isn't worth it. I doubt L-theanine will ever

go anywhere, it is definitely not the magic pill everyone thought it

would be. cath If anyone has positive thoughts about Ltheanine please

let me know!

I don't know...I have a 4 YO who hasn't tolerated most of the supplements. But I did grab my friends 8YO off the bus last spring and he was covered in hives--my invitation to push her away from the pediatrician I fired 3 years ago. We were polar opposites in terms of diet/supps/meds and finally got her to go to a DAN...this kid was up at 2am and crashing a 4pm (in the middle of ABA) and really hyper...nightmare for everyone especially the poor kid He started L-theanine after thanksgiving and he's a whole new kid--too bed at 9 and up at 7. It was bumpy thr first few weeks, but with some tweaking they got the dosing/times right. There's no magic bullet...just hope if you keep working it.
