La ONU advierte de que el estado de mares y océanos empeora «rápidamente»

NAIROBI- Nuevo toque de atención al mundo industrializado desde la

Convención sobre el Cambio Climático que Naciones Unidas celebra en la

capital keniata, esta vez centrado en la «alarmante» situación de mares y

océanos, cuya situación «empeora rápidamente».

Por un lado, el agua marina, hogar de los más ricos, complejos y

desconocidos hábitats de la Tierra, se está volviendo más ácida como

consecuencia de la emisión de CO2 y otros contaminantes a la atmósfera.

Según Santillo, un asesor científico de Greenpeace que participa en

las conferencias de la ONU, los océanos han absorbido ya un tercio del

dióxido de carbono emitido por el hombre en los dos últimos siglos, lo que

ha aumentado su acidez hasta el punto de amenazar los ecosistemas marinos.

«Lo peor es que esto nos afecta, porque pone en peligro el futuro de los

recursos alimenticios que obtenemos del mar», asegura por su parte Stefan

Rahmstorf, del Consejo Alemán sobre Cambio Climático. Los efectos negativos

de la acidificación marina «no tiene precedentes en los últimos millones de

años» y, de continuar el ritmo actual, «será irreversible durante milenios».

Por otro lado, la sobreexplotación pesquera y el aumento del nivel del

mar hace peligrar el modo de vida de 200 millones de personas. Huracanes

devastadores y pérdida de los corales serán las primera consecuencias. «La

tendencia actual, comprobada por satélite, muestra que el nivel del mar sube

tres centímetros por década, lo que se acerca al peor escenario de todos»,

declaró Rahmstorf. En el último siglo, el nivel del mar ha subido 20

centímetros. Para 2100, podría crecer 88 centímetros más, lo que causará 200

millones de desplazados.

En cuanto a las temperaturas globales, limitar su aumento a un máximo de

2 grados centígrados con respecto a la era preindustrial y lograr que no se

incrementen más de 0,2 grados por década «es esencial no sólo para prevenir

peligrosos cambios climáticos, sino para preservar el estado de los

océanos», agrega el documento «Los futuros océanos». Si las temperaturas

aumentaran 3 grados, el nivel del mar para 2300 podría elevarse entre 2,5 y

5,1 metros.

Más de 5.000 participantes asisten a la Conferencia sobre el Cambio

Climático, a la que están asociados 189 Estados, y del Protocolo de Kioto,

ratificado por 166 países. El Protocolo, en vigor desde febrero de 2005,

impone a las naciones industrializadas límites de emisiones de gases

contaminantes para reducirlas antes de 2012 en un 5,2 por ciento respecto a

los niveles registrados en 1990.
