As far as I know that's how it's pronounced.

Kefir Pronunciations

Pat,

You mentioned the correct pronounciation of kefir. I've always pronounced it "KEE-fur". Is that right? It's so embarrasing to mispronounce something! :P

Same here. I got booted and then they sent me a message as to how to get back on my groups. What's with that? Do they just arbitrarily boot people off?

RE: Kefir Pronunciations

I know I'm not Pat, but I got curious when the question came up.

According the Webster Online Dictionary, there are three ways to pronounce kefir and "KEE-fur" is one of them. The other two are "Keh-FEAR", listed first, and probably the most correct way, and "KEH-fur" the way I always want to pronounce it.

And if someone has already posted a link to this dictionary entry, my apologies. I wasn't getting RawDairy messages for a while to due a Yahoo foul up and may have missed it.

I think it's like anything else. Depending on where you live, you may pronounce things differently. You know.....you say tomato and I say tom-mat-o.

That is true K.C. but I'm talking about the correct pronunciation from the country and the language of origin. If we "borrow" the word from other language we should learn to pronounce it correctly, otherwise we could use the English equivalent.

If we stuck to all of that, we'd never have the American English

language. If Webster's offers the three pronunciations, I say, go with

it! I pronounce it mostly as KEE-FIR, myself.

Since that's the only way I've ever heard it pronounced, I'll stick with

myself.

Within our country alone there are several different accents and I guess you

could say dialects that pronounce the same words differently. Since I'm a

West Coast person, born and raised and have lived in the west and northwest

mostly, all the people I've ever heard say the word say KEE-FIR too. I

would imagine people in Europe and Asia say it differently as well.

He says it's KAH-FEER...totally different than what I've EVER

heard...oh well, guess it depends on where you're from, and who you

talk to....

Yeah, it's almost sounds that we don't even make in the English

language, but cool, huh? And sexy sounding voice.
