Guest guest
Hi all, I have permission to post. 2 evenings ago I saw a mom of a 2.5 week old baby with hx of c/s (frank breech) at 39 wks and latching difficulty since birth. Baby slow to gain though back to birth weight by 18 days. Mom's nipples are traumatized, skin is closed but healing. Before my visit she was about to give up because baby takes 1/2 hour to latch and then feeds for 20 minutes. She then tries to feed 2nd side sometimes with success and sometimes not. She was in excruciating pain and would hit the too when baby's hands would brush by her nipples. If she couldn't nurse, she'd be able to pump 2 oz from the R side (sorer side) and about 1 oz from L side -if nursing session skipped. During the visit we had no success getting this baby to latch. We tried what she normally does first (cradle) then we tried laid back, football, and side lying. Each time the baby would attempt to get on he didn't keep going. So then we tried starting with ebm with the bottle, gave a little, went back to breast. No luck. She'd hand express before latching. No luck. We'd drip milk on to her nipple. No luck. Bait and switch, no luck. Ugh. The next day we got her squeezed in with an ENT and his PTT got clipped. I was able to get in touch with a Peds chiro who does CST and she offered to come in today, just to see the baby. Mom has since tries nursing with and without the shield. She says he doesn't suck the same way with the shield and he does better without it. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome. I hate to hear that someone's about to give up.
