Karman,

Did you watch the baby's cheeks as he sucked? They should stay just as round when the jaw is at the bottom of its excursion as when it is up at breast again. If the cheeks flatten or dimple, then the tongue is moving incorrectly. You still have to figure out *why* the tongue is moving incorrectly, but if you see the cheeks dimple or flatten during sucking, you have a direction in which to look for the explanation for sore nipples.

PTP I saw a mom today of a one week old I had seen her last week infant is gaining weight well. Mom was concerned because she is having some nipple discomfort and infant has a diaper rash so she was thinking Thrush but after examination it did not look like thrush no shiny red nipples, no white stuff in infant's mouth. After feeding mother had white patches on nipple after close examination it looked blanched and i thought it might be Raynaud's Syndrome. Being new to private practice I haven't seen Raynaud's in person so I was wondering if you ladies could shed some light on it. Mom's nipples are improving butare still pretty sore infant had a good latch and mom's positioning is good. any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks,Karman Romerowww.babysbreaststart@...

For vasospasms, I recommend dry heat after nursing and also discuss avoiding

cold, massaging nipples (can use a bit of olive oil warmed by finger tips) and

if truly blanching and this doesn't help then a referral to physician for

consideration of Raynaud's diagnosis. Can also see here:

Any chance what Mom is seeing after nursing are blebs? They may appear whiter

after baby comes off and can cause significant pain. The treatment for blebs

would be different than vasospasms, such as a salt water soak.

Thanks for the thoughts. I did watch infant's suck and there was no dimpling of

flattening. Also they didn't look like blebs but rather blanched skin I will

have her try the olive oil
