In the US, we can dial *69 before we dial a phone number, and then our identifying info won't show up on their caller ID. Do you have such a system in Canada? If so, you could use it to just call the other IBCLCs and ask what their fee is, just as though you were a mother who wants to know but isn't comfortable sharing her identity yet.

I too was wondering what to charge. I am in town, Halton Hills Ontario with no IBCLCs within a 30-45min radius. Not wanting to ask them directly I am finding it hard to assertain what the going rate is. I plan to offer home visits with a Tel follow-up service. Any suggestions wecome ........... Vikki Kidd

Thanks Dee for this idea.

I am relatively new to Canada so not sure if this system is available here. If

anyone knows could you let me know?

I've been looking at the websites of local LCs. Some have their prices listed on

their websites. I also belong to the local ILCA chapter and many of the LCs are

willing to tell me their prices.

I know how much most PP LCs charge in this area and most charge close to the

same price. There is one who is less than half of what the others charge, but I

noticed she limits the consult to one hour. Mine usually last 2 hours (I've been

doing it for LLL to help with training and to get used to doing consults in

person). Plus they come to her and I would be doing home visits. I think I'm

going to charge what one of the higher PP LC charges. My father (he owned his

own small engineering firm for 20 years) said you have to figure with expenses

you will only end up keeping half of what you charge if you are lucky. If I

charge $150 per consult and I am lucky to do 10 a week (not likely here) I would

end up with a net of about $60,000 a year. He feels I probably would keep

$30,000 in that ideal scenario. I'm probably going to have to start substitute

teaching to earn enough to survive.
