Guest guest
Hi Dreamer: How weird that they would outlaw that sort of scooter when someone needs it because they are disabled. I agree that calling your local city council or even your district representative is a good idea. Also check with the Arthritis Foundation, they have local chapters and I am sure there is close to your area, and also any groups that fight for the rights of disabled citizens like Americans with Disabilities. Guest guest
no, hubbys scooter is not the same type as mine - his is not specifically for handicapped people..but we could not fit 2 handicappd persons scooters PLUS our 3 kids in our car so we got him a 2 wheeled electric scooter with a seat. - In , Kathe Sabetzadeh <lv2ryd@y...> wrote: > > Hi Dreamer: > > How weird that they would outlaw that sort of scooter > when someone needs it because they are disabled. Guest guest
As far as I know, if he has a prescription for the scooter as a 'handicap aid', it cannot be excluded. Once, when I went into a WalMart with my 4 wheel scooter, I was told I couldn't bring it in the store, so I asked for that in writing. I was admitted with many appologies. Don't just go along with what they say, make them prove it! If possible, get a copy of a prescription from his doctor and carry it with him. I think the Americans With Disabilities Act won't allow this to happen. Guest guest
noone blocked his entrance on the scooter---it was well publicized when they banned the little scooters in all the local papers etc.(becuz they are " dangerous " when kids are riding them recklessly- kinda like skateboards and roller skates, those are also banned here..) so we just did not bother- we are not out to draw tons of attention (my hubbys PTSD and anxiety would cause a real mess) BUT thats a good idea...maybe his VA docs will give him a Rx for it? but will they be willing to make it explain it is for a 2 wheeled type scooter and not a traditional kind from a medical supply place? - In , " Dennis W " <betnden@a...> wrote: > > As far as I know, if he has a prescription for the scooter as a 'handicap aid', it cannot be excluded. Guest guest
Ask your doc to write a prescription for Make and Model scooter. That will cover it so there's no question. I thought of getting one for me, to go with the motorcycle. Many times I don't sit in a chair and almost never on a couch. I'd rather sit on the edge of a desk, the arm of furniture, or a tall stool because it's easier to get 'off' rather than get 'up'. That's the reasoning for the motorcycle. I'm already standing with minimal strain on the legs and a small motion can have me walking without pain. It works for me! Guest guest
Great idea! THanks! I can understand what you are saying- we put my living room chair up on a pedastle so I could slide forward and off instead of trying to " get up " - usually one of the kids will pull me forward if I slip back too far, LOL. and yes, when not at home, I too prefer to sit on the edge of a stool or soemething. Otherwise I get " stuck " sometimes. - In , " Dennis W " <betnden@a...> wrote: > > Ask your doc to write a prescription for Make and Model scooter. That will cover it so there's no question. Guest guest
An almost-relative gave me an elongated commode to put in my bathroom. He also put in a big shower stall that I didn't have to step up into and has a seat on one end. The commode wasn't high enough for me so I took 2 pieces of treated 2x6's and glued them together with homemade biscuits and mounted that on the floor, then the commode above that. It fits perfectly, and I can get on/off with no help at all! Just a little ingenuity saves a lot of money. I'd looked at the handicap units in stores, but don't think they should be worth an extra $150 just because they're a little taller. Can you say " RIP-OFF " ? I've found that I can't buy anything off the shelf to suit me and my challenges, so I do it all myself.
