Here's how to stretch a nipple shield. The trick was taught to me by a mother with very large nipples.

Here's how to stretch them: Put one in boiling water until it is hot so it softens. Fish it out carefully with tongs or something else safe. As soon as it is safe to touch, mother puts thumb inside at juncture of shaft and "hat brim" and puts other fingers outside at the same place. Then she starts tugging around the shaft to stretch it out. As it starts to cool, stop pulling on it and quickly turn it inside out. You MUST turn it inside out to cool it completely or it will pull itself back to its original size. She may need to do this a few times to get it wide enough, but it won't tear.

Is there anything bigger than the Medela 24 out there? Easily available? This mom cannot even come close to fitting in a 24 and when they used it at the hospital, the pain was unbearable. I was able to help her at least get a bit of comfort and the baby fed but on the one breast, the largest of the Ameda flanges is just barely big enough. Her nipples are very very very flat and retracting. Just love when I have mom and baby to deal with...since baby has a posterior tongue tie and high palate to go with. I am hoping for a week without tongue ties sometime soon. It has been a week for tongue tie and low milk supply. Maybe next week will be easier and it can just be simple stuff. :) And it would be so nice if a pediatrician's solution to posterior tongue tie and low milk supply and slow feeding was "NOT" to grab a free formula sample pop on a nipple that pours milk and stuff it in the baby and tell

the mom..."look he can eat, don't make it so hard, just bottle feed and use a faster flow so he doesn't have to suck!" -- Pam MazzellaDiBosco, IBCLC, RLCBirthing & Beyond, Inc.Labor Support and Lactation Consultant Services

I would like to try two of each size to see what they are like.Thank you,Cheryl Dawn n, IBCLC, RLCAlliance, OhioSubject: Re: Re: nipple shieldsTo: Date: Thursday, May 12, 2011, 4:25 PM

hi, I am in Tampa, Florida and run a free lactation support program for our local Healthy Start coalition - similar to WIC clients. I would be interested in buying, perhaps 10 - 20 for each type in various sizes.

Thanks,

Re: nipple shields

HI All, I am in the process of acquiring and account with KaWeCo - Mamivac who makes the nipple shields that Genna really likes. The sizes come in 20 and 28 conical shape (what we normally see) and 18 and 22 cherry shape ( likes these for inverted nipples I believe). My plan is to be the West Coast Distributor…but I need to know a solid interest level before I spend a bunch of money on them… J We need other resources besides what we have. Orders would have to be purchased at sets of like 10 or 20 shields to keep the price lower – international shipping from Germany will be interesting. I am anticipating $3 - $4 per shield (which is just under what Medela asks for wholesale costs) plus shipping to your area. I believe we may actually be able to have East and West Coast Distributors in the near Future to help save shipping for people. J If you are interested please e-mail me privately. I need how many you’d be interested in as well as where you are located. If all goes as planned I will place my first order by next week and get the information on my website. Thank you! I suspect that the nipple could protrude through the holes of a nipple shield if mother is especially elastic and baby is a super sucker, or it's too short. No evidence, just my hunch, for what it is worth.

Re: Re: Nipple shields

This is great too thanks so much.

So can I ask a stupid question that I think

I already know the answer to?

If while using a shield a moms nipple comes

Out the holes on the top that would mean the

Shield is too small, right?

Is this why a lot of you guys wanted those shields from Germany?

Because they came in better sizes.

I teach an inservice on this topic and just my opinion, there is less research on the topic than some would have us believe. And I loved 's article thank-you to whomever shared! But just in time you can access a really good lit review by the ABM in honor of WBW here and another article re: nipple shields.http://social.memberemail.com/Share.aspx?i=7afb2b8e8ea3a9a765608c80befa935c6aab1717a58ea9f9 H. What I would add to the article is the importance of the shield fitting both mother and baby. Sometimes if mother needs a larger size it doesn't fit in baby's mouth, and a smaller size might strangle mother's nipple. The other very important point is that mother needs to be taught how to apply the nipple shield so suction holds it on so as much nipple and areolar tissue as possible is captured in the teat. This usually means she'll need both hands, the teat will be folded back half way, the shield put over nipple, one finger controlling the tip of the teat - allowing it to unfold, slowly, so that suction is created. Mother may need to practice this at the mirror many times before she learns how to do it on herself. If it unfolds quickly, suction is lost, and mother has to start over again.
